The Story and Writing
Jean Grey is the Phoenix, a cosmic force, a superhero, but at the end of the day, she is also human. She’s a human who’s lost so much and has seen so much devastation, so when her sister, Sara, seemingly comes back from the dead, Jean wants to hold on to her. However, that’s easier said than done when Cable shows Jean that Sara isn’t what she thinks she is. Sara was created from the White Hot Room as a byproduct of the Phoenix Force’s cosmic battle. According to the In-Betweener, Sara is real, and she is not real. What is very certain is that Sara’s very existence will be the end of the universe.

This won’t be accepted by Jean, who says she will force the universe to allow Sara’s existence. What Jean doesn’t know is that she will have to battle the Gods, who are adamant that Sara has to die.
There was so much emotion on each page of Phoenix #14, that Stephanie Phillips perfectly illustrated. With flashback scenes that show what Sara and Jean’s dynamic was as little sister and the older sister, we see that there’s so much depth Jean is holding onto. As stated, Jean has lost so much in her life, and she’s not willing to give up her sister just because the God’s tell her she has to. Jean is headstrong in the fact that she won’t kill her sister, even if the entire universe disagrees with her.
The Art
The artwork matches the quality of the story, all thanks to Roi Mercado, Java Tartaglia, and Cory Petit. Roi Mercado ensures that the emotions of the story are perfectly displayed from each of the characters, which hammers the storyline even more into the artwork. Java Tartaglia, the colorist of the comic, makes each page stand on its own with the use of contrasting vibrant colors. Cory Petit, the letterer, makes the dialogue flow perfectly, providing power to the story. As far as the quality of the comic run goes, the artists continue to impress with their fantastic talents.
Final Thoughts
Another banger of a comic from Stephanie Phillips and her creative team! Stephanie recently announced that the Phoenix run will be coming to an end, and while I’m disappointed that it’s ending, I am very grateful for the overall quality this run has had so far.
Overall Grade – 9/10
