Peacemaker Season 1 Recap: Can They Create Another Successful Season?

When Peacemaker was announced by James Gunn, I had no idea about the character. The now wildly successful show will be making its’ season two debut on August 20th. I wanted to quickly give a recap as to the events that happened in season one.

Peacemaker (John Cena) is introduced as this interesting character, who has a complicated history. His real name being Christopher Smith. He has a really bad relationship with his father Auggie Smith (Robert Patrick).  Season 1 is connected to James Gunn’s successful “Suicide Squad, and reintroduced briefly to Amanda Waller (Viola Davis).

Peacemaker has got some help post squad. His new crew is a dynamic group that is working together. Waller’s daughter Leota Adebayo, (Danielle Brooks) John Economos (Steve Agee), Agent Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland), and Adrian Chase known as Vigilante (Freddie Stroma) make up the team. Last but not least we can’t forget our bird friend, Eagly.

This team works uniquely well together. They made me laugh throughout the entire series. All of these established relationships are vital for this particular story to be told. Every performances got me right into the season. 

What made this first season great is the pacing. It helped the jokes, and also the attention to detail. Each person had a goal. Whether or not they reached that goal is still out for debate. What I like also is that Peacemaker is more than what he seems in the television series.

When he has that heartfelt moment, it stands out. Prime example is with Eagly in the hospital. It shows that Peacemaker has a heart. There is also a big indication in the first season that he doesn’t want to be like his father. He wants to be better than what he was. A big reason why is because his father is very racist, and shows it throughout the series. 

I left the season really excited to hear about anything coming form this series. With everything happening at DC Studios, who knew what to expect?. After I went to San Diego Comic Con 2025, I got more answers. I attended the Peacemaker panel at Hall H. James Gunn and John Cena talked about what’s coming.

It will follow the events after Superman. Superman also gave us a big look at some of the new characters that are making an appearance. From the Justice Gang, we’re getting Hawkgirl (Isabel Merced), Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), and Maxwell Lord (Sean Gunn). I can’t wait to see my favorite gang and what they are up to for this second season.

OVERALL THOUGHTS:

Season one of “Peacemaker” really surprised me. John Cena brought something out of the character I wasn’t expecting. Knowing James Gunn had more in store, it really showed what these characters have in store for fans . Peacemaker is back on August 21st, only on HBO MAX.
