PEACEMAKER SEASON 2 SPOILER-FREE REACTION

Published:

This spoiler-free review is courtesy of HBO Max and DC, who were kind enough to send us the first 5 episodes of season 2 of Peacemaker. James Gunn wrote all 8 episodes and directed the first episode and 2 others.

John Cena, Danielle Brooks, Steve Agee, Jennifer Holland, Freddie Stroma, and Robert Patrick all return with the new additions of Frank Grillo, David Denman, Sol Rodriguez, and Tim Meadows. Peter Safran and John Cena are Executive Producers, and there are a host of directors set to take on this highly anticipated second season, such as Greg Mottola, Peter Sollett, and Althea Jones.

Season two picks up after the events of Season one with Christopher Smith (Peacemaker) discovering an alternate world where everything he has wished is true. Unfortunately, he will also be forced to face his past head-on and take the future into his own hands as a result.

Let’s Get Into It

The first 5 episodes are much in tune with the first season, where we are full of violent action and raunchy comedy. The core cast is back, and we find them each dealing with the fallout of the first season in various ways. Leading some to make questionable choices that will test the boundaries of their friendships. John Cena shines extraordinarily bright as he returns with more of his crude and prolific humor, but we are given a layer of emotional depth to his character as he struggles to come to terms with the things he has done in his past. There are scenes where Cena is having heartfelt conversations with characters and showcasing a range of emotions that will hit hard and left me coming away impressed with his ability to make this anti-hero multi-dimensional.

Gunn has discussed that all will be revealed as to what is canon and what will not be going forward, and it doesn’t take long to get these answered, and I think fans will enjoy the answers that Gunn gives. As they are both clever and allow for world building in this new DC Universe him and Safran are building.

New Intro?

Yes, there is a new intro but, no, I will not give away any details as this is something you will absolutely not want to skip, as in my opinion I love the new intro song and routine more than season one’s, which was incredible in every way. There are some things you will just need to discover for yourself!

In terms of the action, this season pulls no punches as there are many hilarious and well-choreographed fight sequences, as well as outfit choices that left me wondering how anybody could move that well in leather pants as though they just left a Miami nightclub.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the first 5 episodes of Peacemaker season 2 are nothing short of emotional, kick-ass, and addictive as Gunn and crew make us feel as though we have been reunited with long lost friends. There are nods to previous events and an intriguing plot that will leave you wondering how the hell they will resolve this. Make sure to tune into the season premiere of Peacemaker season 2, August 21st at 9 pm EST, and each week afterwards!
