FANTASTIC FOUR #2: Let’s Do the Time Warp Again!

Published:

Marvel’s first family in a way we have never seen before, as they are separated across time, left on their own. However, they had a contingency plan should this ever happen. Unfortunately for Sue Storm, the Forever Stone is nowhere to be found, which leaves them at risk of being trapped forever!

Ryan had us fooled in the first half. I won’t lie about it. He gives Sue her time to shine as she uncovers a way to find the stone and save her family in what seemed as though almost too easy a way. Well, that’s because it was.

North tricks us into a false sense of security and into a celebratory moment as the family reunites but, quickly pulls the rug from underneath of us in a very clever and dramatic fashion.

The storytelling in this issue was clever and allows for Sue to shine, but on the other side showcases just how strong a foe Doom is.

Ramos, Olazaba, and Delgado showcase Sue’s powers and bending the light in crafty, detailed ways. Showing off invisibility can be difficult, and really leaning into her other powers allows for the art team to show stark contrast between the bland background of a desolate Earth and the light-bending manner in which Sue showcases her raw power.

The battle sequences are messy and detailed, allowing for the Fantastic Four to arrive on scene epically and bursting with an array of color and power. Each member stands out on their own, while Doom is drawn with much anger and detail. I’m enjoying how the art team makes the scenary work for them and keeps this story fresh at the same time.

Fantastic Four #2 lures us into a false sense of security before flipping the story on its head and proving that Doom truly is all-powerful. This was never going to be an easy fight nor a fair one, which makes this a must-read.
