Story:

Charles directs a marvelous and tragic final issue of this version of Daredevil. Every issue has led to this moment, and the landing certainly sticks. This is perhaps Matt Murdock’s big finish, and it leaves the reader feeling emotionally drained and wrecked when all is said and done. Despite finishing this run in a bleak manner, there is a message of hope amongst the wreckage.

Soule does a wonderful job of delivering as Murdock takes his final breaths. This alternate timeline was fueled by anger and years of devastation and it plays out poetically reminding us that not every story has a happy ending. Clayton’s letters hit like soft piano notes bleeding out onto the pages capping off the final moments in this book making it all the more hauntingly beautiful.

The Artwork:

Thanks to Steve and Dean, this issue is every bit as gruesome and violent as you would expect it to have been. The duo does not skip a detail as the cables rip through Frank’s flesh, whether he is unhooked from the wall or getting himself into the mechanical suit.

There is an intense amount of raw detail and anger fleshed out in Frank, who never speaks a word, and yet the artwork tells a thousand of them. This book is not for the squeamish, as the duo gives us moments of carnage. Each character has a definitive end that is done justice through the graphically drawn detail of Steve and then colored to perfection by Dean.

Final Thoughts:

Daredevil: Cold Day in Hell #3 is a poetic tragedy from start to finish, leaving you with tears in your eyes and vivid, gruesome images in your memory as it wraps up in a haunting yet somehow hopeful manner.
