The Story and Writing
Continuing the story of Cassandra Cain who’s just met her brother for the first time, things seem to be escalating very quickly. Because of the sins of her mother, The Unburied have to kill Cassandra so they’re able to put their past to rest.
What The Unburied aren’t aware of is that Lady Shiva had more than one child, and may be walking into more than the assassin, Norbu, bargained for.
Norbu isn’t the only one who may be in over his head. Tenji, who is Cassandra’s brother and Lady Shiva’s other child, seems to be less than prepared to fight, even though his father trained him himself. His skills aren’t up to par in Cassandra’s eyes, and will put him in harm’s way when it comes to fighting The Unburied’s grandmaster.
Wrapped in excitement and emotion, Tate Brombal continues the story of Cassandra as she makes her way through grief and trying to understand the secrets her mother kept. What I really enjoyed was that we got a better look at the dynamic between Tenji and Lady Shiva, showing just how distant the mother could be to her own son. It also showed how desperate Tenji is for a real family, as it’s only been him and his father for most of his life.
The Art
Takeshi Miyazawa and Mike Spicer continue to impress with their work for Batgirl, illustrating the excitement of the storyline. Batgirl #10 is full of action and fantastic fighting sequences that shine in the panels. Along with Miyazawa and Spicer is Tom Napolitano who handles the letters. Napolitano does a superb job at making the reader feel the emotion in every sentence, particularly when it comes from Tenji. All in all, the artists continue to bring the story to life in the best of ways.
Final Thought
Batgirl #10 feels like a it’s a perfect split between emotion and action, and I can’t wait to see what the creative team does next!
Overall Grade – 8.4/10
