The Story:
Al kicks off this book with a shocking death and an intense amount of emotion. Hal Jordan has hit his breaking point in what seems like a pressure cooker, finally going off at its limit. Seeing how the black has devoured Hal once he opted to make the choices he did was wild. I am curious to see what happens moving forward with him. Jo is holding her own and I love to see how she is battling her past and how she is coming out of it stronger on the other side. I will say we are still left with more questions that I would like to see begin o get answered but that by no means detracts from Al’s story.
The Art:
Jahnoy does some amazing and detailed work in the panels as they frame as though glass shatters when Hal pulls the trigger of the gun. The art is pulled from there into a body horror feel as Hal is sucked into the black, sludgy, goo that is eating him away. The contrast of Jo in bright green as a Lantern and Hal in black offers a stunning battle sequence that stands out against the desert scenery. Jahnoy’s work invokes emotion as they fight it out and immerses the reader deeper into the book.
Final Thoughts:
Absolute Green Lantern #5 is an emotionally charged rollercoaster as two friends are forced to face off against one another, and a mysterious third party has entered the fray.
Overall Grade: 9/10
