Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I’m going to be reviewing the 14th issue of The Ultimates from Marvel Comics!

Our heroes have been preparing for The Maker’s impending return in the next few months, but that’s not to say they’re not still dealing with other threats right now. But what happens when they go face to face with something they didn’t expect? Let’s jump into it!

The Ultimates #14 by Deniz Camp (Writer), Juan Frigeri (Artist), Federico Blee (Color Artist), VC’s Travis Lanham (Letterer) is a great issue that really raises the stakes for the immediate future despite the overall threat still pending.

The Story

Deniz Camp is quickly becoming one of my favorite writers in all of comics, because he does so much in such a short amount of time!

There’s a couple of different stories going on with this issue. The first of which is Captain America & Hawkeye going on a mission to destroy another Hellfire Club stronghold. It’s a great bit of action, and a fun little bet is made between the two.

The second story is with the CEO’s of Roxxon, Alchemex, Hammer Weapons, AIM & Midas Inc, getting together to figure out how they can stop The Ultimates.

It’s a spirited discussion, but the real twist comes once Quicksilver & the Scarlett Witch are introduced! It’s a fantastic introduction that instantly launches into a battle between them & Cap + Hawkeye.

It’s going to be very interesting to see where things go from here regarding those two. And given how many big swings (aka differences) the creative teams are taking with the Ultimate universe, I’m excited to see how this plays out.

The Artwork

Juan Frigeri & Federico Blee are truly magnificent in this issue with the work they do. I really like their designs for Quicksilver & the Scarlett Witch! It’s familiar, but at the same time different. It’s got a little bit of the more recent comics feel while borrowing a little from the cinematic universe. But they still put their own spin on it, and it works!

I also can’t get over just how good the Ultimates universe looks between this and Ultimate Spider-Man. They’re so unique and distinct, but also keeping a familiar look and feel for long time readers of Marvel Comics. They’re easily some of the best looking comics on the stands today.

FINAL POINT: Deniz Camp pens a story that is about as can’t miss as it gets, while Juan Frigeri & Federico Blee create an absolute masterclass in the artwork department. This is definitely going to be an issue everyone is going to be talking about, and you don’t want to miss it!

Overall Grade: 9.5/10
