The Story and Writing
Mia DiMaria has plenty of problems that most people have, one being that she hates her job. Her boss doesn’t like her, doesn’t even try to remember her name. The job doesn’t pay enough, despite Mia putting so many hours in.
The worst part is that she isn’t even able to quit the job. All of these factors are not out of the ordinary for a normal person’s job, but the job is no normal job.
Mia is a chained apprentice to her boss Wyn, who is the Avatar of The-Powers-That-Be, a magic god. While there can be benefits to being the apprentice to an Avatar of a magic god, Mia just isn’t seeing them when it comes to her job.
She feels underutilized, underappreciated, and unamused when it comes to being an apprentice to Wyn. There has to be some kind of change if this is the job she’s forced to stay with by the gods themselves.
On this particular day of work, Mia finds herself in an unexpected situation when Wyn shows up to her place claiming the world is ending and they’re the only ones who can save it. Well, them and another sorcerer who combines technology and magic, the one and only Doctor Doom.
Doctor Doom, who is now Sorcerer Supreme and Emperor of the world, agrees to help save the world alongside Wyn and Mia, but little does Mia know, that working with Doom will change everything for her.
Ryan North, the writer of G.O.D.S.: One World Under Doom #1, did a great job showing the appeal of Doom, rather than the usual intimidating side of him. Doom showed kindness and support to Mia, who has never experienced that with Wyn. Opening her eyes to how she should be treated as an apprentice, Doom really made a difference in Mia’s life moving forward.
The Art
The creative team illustrated a comic that’s downright magical when discussing the artwork. Francesco Mortarino, who serves as the artist, paid an excellent amount of attention to the details of each panel. From the magical symbols created by Doom, to the gorgeous magical powersets of the characters, Mortarino showcases their talent on every page.
Joining Mortarino is Raúl Angulo, the color artist, and Travis Lanham, the letterer of G.O.D.S.: One World Under Doom #1, both of which brought the same level of heat to the comic. Where I think their combined talents shined the brightest was when the magical team heads to the Sun’s core to repair the sigils. The ferociousness of the hellfire demons along with the vibrant fiery panels was nothign short of a work of art.
Final Thoughts
As the One World Under Doom event continues, we’re gifted with even more compelling side stories that drips in quality. G.O.D.S.: One World Under Doom #1 is no exception to that. Ryan North was the exact right person to write this story!
