The Story:

Kicking off the story with Michael facing down a party of Parademons I cannot help but wonder if this means Michael is going to find himself in the looming tournament against Darkseid that has been announced recently to which excites me to see him possibly be the lead in to the big event.

I do love that Al leans heavily into Holt’s experience, albeit somewhat unpolished, as we are left with a cliffhanger at the end of this issue. Seeing Michael utilize his technology and seem one step ahead, such as with hologram home alert devices and his T-Spheres, this issue kicks the story up a gear.

The Art:

The cover itself is a fantastic image, showing a larger-than-life Michael Holt in his Fair Play jacket looming over the city. The cover sets us up for the adventure within the pages. The unpolished look that the art team gives Terrific with his helmet and Fair Play jacket shows us the elements of his look we see in the present time with Edwin’s art, and is a fun spin on a year-one attire at the same time. I enjoy seeing how the fight sequences were drawn by Valentine, and there is a ruggedness to them as Holt is still learning and not the smooth fighter we would expect, and he is fighting for his life. It’s the little details in the art with this issue that really work for me.

Final Thoughts:

Mr Terrific Year One #3 sets us up for DC’s big event that looms on the horizon and also takes us back in time, showing the important growth Michael faces to become the hero we know today. It’s a must-read for fans wanting to learn about the character!
