Catch up with Robin and Batman: Jason Todd #1 here!

The Story

Picking up right where Robin and Batman: Jason Todd #1 left off, Batman and Jason are standing over the body of a dead Cuckoo when they’re interrupted by a mysterious figure. Batman tells Jason to stay back as he attempts to take on the mysterious figure we only know as Wraith, but he proves to be more of fight than Batman assumed. With a bright flash of light from Wraith’s device, he’s disappeared without a trace, leaving Batman and Jason in their state of confusion.

Getting right back to the problem at hand, Jason tells Batman that he saw his face when he found him with Cuckoo, and he knows Batman thinks Cuckoo died ta Jason’s hands. Batman denies this accusation, and says that Jason needs some rest, but that doesn’t sit well with Jason, who’s turned his back on his mentor.

Back at the Batcave, Alfred, again, expresses concern about Batman mentoring Jason, which Batman agrees with. However, Batman refuses to accept that Jason is too broken to be helped, so he plans to continue to mentor Jason to help fix him. Jason, who says he didn’t kill Cuckoo, shows that he wasn’t lying as we get a look back at exactly what happened. Turns out, Jason wasn’t alone, and was actually being sought after by this mysterious Wraith to join him in his fight for Gotham. Leaving him with an address, Wraith hopes to have Jason on his side.

The Writing

Jeff Lemire, the writer of Robin and Batman: Jason Todd #2, continues this second issue with showing how broken Jason really is. I think Jason’s need to build a wall between himself and anyone that tries to help him shows the most when he’s with Nightwing, he just wanted to support him. Jason is in his own realm of darkness, and it’s seen by everyone, including Batman, Alfred, and Nightwing. Lemire brings you into the trauma of Jason and somehow makes you feel all of his anguish and heartache, while experiencing his frustration with his everyday life as the Boy Wonder.

The Art

I cannot say enough good things about the art of Robin and Batman: Jason Todd #2 as it’s absolutely stunning all the way through the comic. Dustin Nguyen showcases his talents in watercolors and shows just how to express emotion through the work of the paint. The artwork fits the tone of the story so very well, I would say that Nguyen elevated the story itself with his talents.

Some of my favorite parts that I think put the beauty of the artwork on full display are the fight sequences. Whether is be Batman and Wraith fighting or Jason and Nightwing fighting side by side, Nguyen made these panels look graceful and gorgeous.

Final Thoughts

This was a fantastic issue of Robin and Batman: Jason Todd! The creative team truly knows what they’re doing to provide a hard-hitting and emotional comic that sings to your soul. Looking forward to what’s next for Jason Todd!
