The Story and Writing

With the excitement of ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ coming to theaters, a comic by the same name and the actors in their roles seems like a perfect idea. In The Fantastic Four: First Steps #1, we see Marvel’s First Family fight their very first battle with Harvey Elder, AKA Mole Man. What makes this so enticing is the fact that it’s the upcoming movie’s actors in their own roles. So Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach are in the comic as their MCU counterparts.

It’s a really cool way to see them in their roles before the movie hits theaters, and I think Matt Fraction wrote this comic fantastically. Along with their first battle with their nemesis, the Fantastic Four also have their own dialogue throughout the comic, commenting on what’s happening. The feel of it is that they’re speaking to several different outlets, and are being quoted throughout the comic. I think this made the storyline even better, seeing what the characters had to say throughout the read.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps #1 only made my excitement grow for the movie, after seeing the MCU actors in their roles, fighting alongside each other like a family.

The Art

The artists of The Fantastic Four: First Steps #1 really went out of their way to create a beautiful comic. Mark Buckingham, the artist, put so much detail into each panel, making it hard to want to turn the page. Accompanying Buckingham is Alex Sinclair, who elevated everything about the comic with his work on the colors. With the use of contrasting colors, each page felt like an action-filled extravaganza. Joe Caramagna worked on the letters, and to no surprise, expertly handled the lettering. The artists all came together and did a phenomenal job retelling such an iconic story.

Final Thoughts

I thought this was a lot of fun, and only elevated the hype for the movie. The creative team knocked it out of the park!
