Batman Gotham by Gaslight: A League for Justice #1: By golly, there is an attack on the small town of Smallville by a notorious gang led by Harley at the direction of dastardly Lex Luthor! Unfortunately for them, there is a myth protecting the town, and he isn’t alone.

Creative Team:

The Story:
BRING WESTERNS BACK! And more importantly, give me more superheroes set during the Wild Wild West. Andy crafts an adventurous first issue that captures a lot of the western spirit in shows and movies that I grew up watching. There very much is that boy scout attitude to The Sentinal..no The Supernaturalist..whatever he goes by in this issue.
There is a deep mythos to each of the other characters as well that I found fun. Rather than being friends, each one battled and showcased their skills and had a moment to shine. Simon gives each character a voice and letters to capture the western lingo, even more enhancing the immersion.
The Art:
Leandro and Matt bring a lot of flair and uniqueness to the characters in this setting as well. Giving Superman a domino mask and cowboy boots was a fun, unique design for him and different than what we are used to seeing. Green Lantern rocked his cowboy boots, and Martian Manhunter had a raw, scary look to him I also enjoyed. This issue was set at night, but there is a lot of glowing greens and flames detailed throughout. All in all, this issue was a lot of fun visually.
Final Thoughts:
Batman Gotham by Gaslight: A League for Justice #1 is a unique breath of fresh air, taking us to an old western time and good old-fashioned fun. There is a lot of fresh air and a lot to love in this issue that makes it a must-pull!
Overall Grade: 10/10
