Duma Key, by Stephen King – A Book Review

Stephen King has become a household name that’s synonymous with horror. While he ventures outside horror with amazing stories like, Shawshank Redemption, Duma Key definitely falls under the category of creepy. I didn’t read a single Stephen King book until less than two years ago, and he’s already taking up a good chunk of my book shelf. As a newbie, anytime his name comes up in conversation, anyone whose ever enjoyed a book from him, has a recommendation.

That’s exactly what happened here. While interviewing Ernie Altbacker about his new comic, Area 51 Studios, we ended up on a Stephen King tangent. He highly recommended Duma Key, which helped me pick my Nerd Initiative book club pick for June.

The Story for Duma Key

Duma Key is a story about tragedy and trying to start over. However, life has a funny way of sometimes kicking you when you’re down. Or simply kicking you once you think you’ve picked yourself back up. In a short period of time Edgar Freemantle suffers a horrible workplace accident that causes him to lose his right arm, his wife, and quite often his temper. One of his biggest struggles has been his memory. Someone suggests he get a change of scenery. Off to Florida he goes.

He finds a gorgeous spot off the west coast of Florida, in the Gulf of Mexico. An island called Duma Key. He meets the neighbors, he begins painting sunsets, and physically and mentally he starts to heal. However, surreal things begin to happen. Things he can’t logically believe, but emotionally has no trouble doing so. As he finds himself and loved ones in unexpected danger he begins to learn more about the history of the island, and its “previous” inhabitants.

Overall Grade: 8.5/10

It doesn’t matter if Stephen King is describing someone making a sandwich or terrorizing a school prom with pig’s blood. Every description he writes just so beautifully paints a picture and a feeling that you immediately know what he’s talking about. Even if you’ve never had your prom terrorized by a girl with telekinesis covered in blood, you can perfectly imagine it.

Whether Edgar was talking to one of his daughters, or fighting for his life, you felt what he felt, and saw what he saw. I loved seeing him heal while simultaneously falling apart. The more he learned about the island and its past, the darker and harder things got. It was twist after twist with a depressing yet satisfying ending.

If you’re a Stephen King fan, absolutely grab this one if you haven’t! Summer is the perfect time to enjoy Duma Key. Preferably with your toes in the sand or the ocean surrounded by seashells.
