The Adventures of Ulysses Monarch #3
It’s no secret that Marc Guggenheim is on my short list for top writers in the medium. Guggenheim is my favorite kind of comic scribe, a man with diverse experience beyond comics, vasty intelligent and someone who brings immediate gravitas to the profession.
In Ulysses Monarch, you truly have an original series that’s a hint of Star Wars, hint of Bladerunner and peppered in with so many other unique influences that it really becomes a delicious stew of action, heart and humor.
A mysterious new ally, a cryptic prophecy and a thrilling conquest at hand, Ulysses must lean on trust if he plans to find all the answers he’s looking for … and the codex. It’s one heck of a ride and something you certainly don’t want to miss if you’re a fan of sci-fi!
Creative Team:
Writer: Marc Guggenheim
Artist: Harvey Tolibao
Color Artist: Mark Englehart
Letters: Diego Sanches
Publisher: Comixology
The Art:
Tolibao’s art has a retro quality to it. It’s not too flashy or distracting that it takes away from the story and the riddle of the prophecy.
You can still look at the art and feel the temperature in the room, it’s just not overpowering in the best way possible.
The art is still full of life and incredibly fun for fans of all genres, it just takes a backseat to the fast-moving and unique story that’s more akin to a thrilling novel than your usual comic book.
In short, the art adds a visual layer to this exciting book!
THE ADVENTURES OF ULYSSES MONARCH #1 BLAZES A NEW TRAIL
The Writing:
Guggenheim truly has created such a unique, fun adventure. I’m just sad I have to wait till next month to learn more.
From the young mentee to the wise-cracking droid, it truly smacks of an adventure from another galaxy, but with such amazing original comic book qualities.
The Headhunter is someone I’m genuinely excited to get to know and know their motivations, as we see this story continue to unfold.
But before this can happen, our delightful trio may need to figure out how to get out of a perilous situation. It’s your classic comic cliffhanger that I have a love/hate relationship with – love how it gets my heart racing, hate the wait till next month!
Overall Grade: 9/10
Looking to break away from your usual Batman or Spider-Man fix? Ulysses Monarch is a bold, high-octane alternative that delivers everything you want in a modern action-adventure comic.
With slick storytelling, intense pacing, and a hero you’ll want to root for—or question—this book checks all the right boxes.
It’s a fresh yet familiar thrill ride that fans of caped crusaders and wall-crawlers will appreciate, while carving out a unique identity all its own. If you’re ready for your next comic book obsession, Ulysses Monarch might just be the breakout title you’ve been waiting for. Don’t sleep on it.
