The Story and Writing

Megan – Ryan North knew exactly what he was doing when he wrote Krypto: The Last Dog of Krypton #1. He knew he would have the readers in an emotional chokehold, which is exactly where I’m at after reading the book.

Krypto: The Last Dog of Krypton #1 follows everyone’s favorite super dog on Krypton before disaster hits the planet and Krypton’s inhabitants. Knowing what’s coming and being the only ones who know it, Jor-El and Lara come up with a plan to find safety when the time comes.

They plan to have a rocket ship that takes them off of Krypton and gets them to safety. Of course, this means there has to be test runs before the plan is secure, so it’s Krypto’s time to shine.

Being the test subject of the practice launch, all he has to do is relax and enjoy the ride, as long as the ride goes well that is. When the testing laugh goes wrong, Krypto finds himself in a wormhole, to be spit out onto Earth. While on Earth, Krypto gets a less than kind welcome, but finds comfort in an unexpecting person by the end.

Matt – Do you want to know how to get me to shed tears? Involve a cute puppy and then put that cute puppy in a scary situation. Thanks to Ryan, he tugs on every heartstring in my chest as this issue does a lot of setting up in unexpected ways. We knew Krypto would have to go to Earth on an adventure, but being the spaceship tester and then being picked up by an unexpected person at the end of the issue was enough to get me fully invested.

The Art

Megan – Mike Norton, the artist of Krypto: The Last Dog of Krypton #1, did a phenomenal job at capturing the magic of Krypton. Matched with the colorings of Ian Herring, the comic is wrapped beautifully in a huge amount od details and vibrant colors. That all changes drastically once Krypto hits Earth, which add to the tone of feeling lost and confused very nicely.

Matt Krypto obviously doesn’t speak words, so it was up to Mike and Ian to capture our pup’s many feelings. The fear and loneliness portrayed as he is on his way to Earth and is in this foreign land was captured beautifully. There were many cute artistic beats but none such more than Krypto curled up with baby Clark which instantly sent me back when my kids were babies themselves.

Final Thoughts

Megan – 10/10. I loved so much about Krypto: The Last Dog of Krypton #1, and can’t wait to see what the creative team brings in the issue. Following Krypto through his journey from Krypton, inside a wormhole, then onto Earth had my eyes transfixed on the pages. Ryan North and his creative team killed it!

Matt – 9.8/`10. Krpyto #1 tugs on your heart strings and is an intergalactic adventure that will leave you with a few surprises from the team. I need to read more immediately!

Overall Grade – 10/10
