Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong Pt 2 #1: Barry Allen’s wedding day is here! He and Iris are finally tying the knot and what should be a day of happiness is instead met with chaos as Amanda Waller is up to her usual antics only this time she creates a titan of her own. She has thrown the world once more into the target of the titan Godzilla.
Creative Team:
Brian Buccellato (WRITER) Christian Duce (ARTIST) Luis Guerrero (COLORIST) Comicraft’s Tyler Smith (LETTERS)
*SPOILERS AHEAD*
The Story:
Brian has a tall task to follow up on his incredible run last year, which brought so much excitement. He kicks it off as though he has not missed a beat starting with that classic Hal and Barry humor as Barry is getting married but, has not told Iris who he is yet. It’s normal for Iris to always know that Barry is the Flash so going this route adds a layer of depth and add in the fact him and Hal have a bet going is chefs kiss.
Amanda Waller meanwhile has been up to her usual antics and this time we see the Suicide Squad in play as more humor fills the story with the Legion of Doom characters none too happy about Lex’s previous antics. I was curious how this run would kickstart the titans returning and somehow never thought that King Shark being made into a Titan would be the way it goes. I am loving that Brian decided to go this route and have King Shark and Godzilla dual in the opening issue. Topping it off the issue ends in a shocking way that I did not see coming and it is safe to say we are so back.
The Art and Letters:
Christian and Luis take us right back into this world as Luis’s colors stand out incredibly well in the opening issue. The vibrancy of our heroes in action such as Flash’s suit and the heroes watching Barry’s wedding from the Hall of Justice all stand out in a visually pleasing manner. Christian’s artistic style is perfect as the amount of detail we get with King Shark as he levels up was fascinating. The number of teeth and the ferocity that hits his usual mild-mannered face mixed with the epic battle between him and Godzilla will have the readers beyond hyped.
Christian and Luis capture things such as Barry’s speed and tornado arm abilities in great detail and this is another reason why I loved this issue. Tyler’s letters are a blend of capturing the humor and then when it comes time to bring the voice to characters such as Boomerang and Waller the subtle detail and switch in doing so blends this issue seamlessly together.
Overall Grade: 10/10
We have re-entered this world without skipping a beat making me realize just how much I was looking forward to this second part. Issue one takes us to familiar places and ups the ante a bit more giving the reader a taste of what is to come with this second part. This is an absolute must read!
