The Story

In every city, a mysterious door appears all over the word, and once curious people go in, they don’t come out. Voices of their lost loved ones beckon them to come inside the door, with promises of seeing the people who have died in the past. Of course, there’s just no way this can be true. Wanda Maximoff, AKA the Scarlet Witch, is called by Darcy because one of these dark doors appeared in front of their store.

The door has attracted the wrong kind of attention, as the Dead Wings Motorcycle Club is demanding entrance into what they call the “death door”. Ted Krasneck, the president of the motorcycle club, says that opening the door will lead them to meet their lady, Death. Wanda won’t allow them in as they really don’t understand what the doors do. So, for the club’s own safety, she won’t allow them to enter. The club doesn’t take kindly to that, turning into a mystical scuffle between them and Wanda.

Before things get even more out of control, Vision shows up to offer a helping hand. After Wanda and Vision make quick work of the Dead Wings MC, it’s revealed that one of their members snuck through the door during the ruckus. It turns out, Vision was already on his way to see his ex wife because of the doors. With the death doors using the voices of fallen loved ones, and Wanda having lost so much in her life, Vision didn’t think his ex wife should be alone.

Once Vision is at home, his mind wanders. He thinks of his wife, Virginia, his son, Vin, and it leads Vision to a name, Eric Williams. That’s when it hits him. Could Eric be behind the doors?

It seems the answer will come to him faster than he can find it as he finds the Master of Death sitting in his house. The Master of Death has much more on his mind than a friendly visit, as he plan to rip Vision to shreds. Wanda hurries to help Vision before she’s too late. She shows up just in time to hear Vision giving his last words, after he had been ripped apart. Wanda only has seconds to help him, if she even can.

The Writing

Megan – So much happens in The Vision & The Scarlet #1, and Steve Orlando makes it all flow evenly with ease. There’s action, there’s mystery, there’s even heartbreak, and all in the first installment. This comic run seems to be following the same quality as the Scarlet Witch comic series by Orlando, and if that’s continued, then this will be nothing less than a mindblowing success. I love how Olrando writes Wanda, as it feel like he truly understands the character, and is able to write a story as magical as she is.

Matt – There is a whirlwind of emotions in this opening issue. Wanda is battling against anger and mystery in what is the story behind Death’s Door. Meanwhile, she and Vision are still working through their respective grief and Vision particular is still in search of his son. I enjoy how human Vision in particular feels as he struggles to allow his daughter to go off alone but, still being worried due to the loss of her brother. Orlando does an excellent job weaving all of this together seamlessly into an excellent opening issue.

The Art

Megan – Lorenzo Tammetta, Ruth Redmond, and Travis Lanham are to thank for the incredible artwork all through The Vision & The Scarlet Witch #1. With the gorgeous powersets of Wanda, Vision, and even Eric, you’re treated to each page being nothing short of stunning. What really stood out to me was the amount of emotion put into the last few pages involving Wanda and Vision. You could really feel the tone of each character, and feel when those tones changed just by the art.

Matt – This issue boasts an array of horror and magical beings as Vision and Wanda battle against demonic beings that are strikingly realistic and grotesque. When Marvel leans into the magic and creepy they are at their best in my opinion and the artwork here is a shining example. The emotions captured by Vision despite him not being human is not an easy feat either and yet the team manages to do so.

This first issue offers a taste of what is to come and I can confidently say that Marvel has my interest immediately!

Overall Grade – 10/10
