The Story

It’s been quite the eventful time for Jean, as she defeated the Dark Gods and was on her way to bring balance to the cosmos. That is, until she received a psychic message from someone she never expected, her sister Sara. Sarah was believed to be dead from sticking up for the mutant population and was killed by purifiers, so how is this possible?
Jean can’t sense her anywhere in the galaxy, but she knows for a fact that was her sister calling out to her. Scott recommends trying to use the White Hot Room to find her sister, since the Phoenix Force has a connection to it.
While trying to connect to the White Hot Room, something wasn’t right. Something was attacking the Phoenix’s connection to the White Hot Room while Jean was trying to get in. Just when Jean is on the ground in pain, someone calls out her name. When she looks up, it’s none other than her believed to be dead sister, Sara! While Jean can’t make heads or tails of how this is possible, she’s just happy to have her sister back.
Meanwhile, in the very distant future, Cable, AKA Nathan Summers, is on the search for something that changed the past, which will change his present. In an attempt to find out what it is, he’s planned a trip to visit his dear stepmother, Jean.
The Writing
After Jean defeating the Dark Gods, I really didn’t know where she would go from there, but just by the beginning of this character arc, I can see that it’s going to be fantastic. There’s already so much emotion involved in this arc, along with it being shrouded in mystery. Sara finding Jean brings many questions to the story that I’m excited to be answered. Plus, with adding Cable into the mix, it makes it an exciting family affair.

Stephanie Phillips continues to impress with her ability to elevate Jean’s story with every installment of this comic book run. Phillips proves to understand the character to such an amazing level, and uses that understanding to enhance Jean Grey to levels that I didn’t think were possible before. I’m really looking forward to learning more about how Sara is alive, and how Jean is able to handle all these unanswered questions.
The Art
The artwork of Phoenix #11 was certainly different than the past issues, but I felt it matched the tone of the storyline very well. Roi Mercado, the artist of the comic, does a great job with the amount of detail he provides in each panel. Adding that with Java Tartaglia’s colors and Cory Petit’s work on the letters, you have a pretty stunning comic. What I really appreciate is how the artists are able to switch tones on a dime, like when Jean is experiencing her nightmares involving Sara or when they arrive to Greyhaven.
Overall Grade – 8.9/10
