The Story

Since Gwen has bonded to the Cosmic Cube, it’s caused King Loki to take a huge interest in her. In hopes to convince Gwen to reshape the universe to what he wants it to be, King Loki has taken her on an intergalactic tour to show her how needed a reshaping is. On the last stop of the trip, King Loki took Gwen to a planet that, on the outside, seemed like a wonderful place, a utopia in Gwen’s eyes. But when taking a closer look, the planet was much more sinister than expected. The planet was thriving off the psychic citizen’s powers, who were enslaved and drained of their powers.

Gwen, being the hero she is, immediately reacted to save the psychic’s with the power of the Cosmic Cube, but didn’t take the time to ponder what her actions could mean for the planet as a whole. She gets her answer pretty quickly once she sees that her cosmic blast has destroyed a large portion of the planet’s infrastructure. Not only that, but the pain from the enslaved psychics raised an alarm for a galactic hero to come, a hero by the name of Jean Grey.

With this surprise visit, Jean and Gwen were able to stop the destruction. However, Jean had many questions for Gwen, namely what had happened on the planet, and why she felt all of the psychics screaming for help simultaneously. Gwen explained everything from King Loki to the enslaved psychic citizens, but that led to Jean finding out about Gwen being bonded to the Cosmic Cube. Utterly shocked, Jean asked if she could take a look under the hood, peering into Gwen’s mind. Once Jean was inside the mind of the Ghost-Spider, it became very clear that she wasn’t welcomed there by the Cosmic Cube.

The Writing

What better person to help Gwen through the overwhelming battle of controlling a cosmic power inside herself is there than Jean Grey? It’s very obvious that this visit from Jean was exactly what Gwen needed in order to fight for a balance and remain in control of herself and the powers of the Cosmic Cube. It was a very heartfelt moment seeing Gwen feel reassured that she’s doing a good job, and she will continue to do just that.

Stephanie Phillips having a crossover with her own two comics, Spider-Gwen: The Ghost-Spider and Phoenix was absolutely brilliant work. Two powerhouse heroes working together and being a shoulder to lean on for the other was phenomenal. I hope to see these two work together more in the future!

The Art

Paolo Villanelli, Matt Milla, and Ariana Maher continue to impress with their incredible talents of bringing this exciting story to life. Villanelli draws Jean in a way that leads her character to look like a stunning piece of art in every panel she’s in.

Matt Milla brought so much heat while handling the colors of Spider-Gwen: The Ghost-Spider #13. There are some jaw dropping panels in the comic, and I think Milla has a lot to do with that. There are quite a few different parts where the colors pop off the page, and almost all of them are involved with Jean. Ariana Maher nails it while handling the lettering, as she usually does. She gives so much depth to the inner monologue from Gwen and makes you feel every word.

Overall Grade – 9.3/10
