The Story:
Hal and Carol head to the D.E.O Headquarters with Dove in tow to see if Hal’s gut was right about Hector Hammond’s supposed turn towards the light. Meanwhile, Kyle’s Super Team (please don’t call them that…) head into Reach territory to “acquire” some of their Nth Metal. Kyle’s mission gets sidetracked and both he and Hal encounter surprising threats and unlikely allies.
The Writing:
I’ve been so incredibly impressed with this series as a whole and this issue was no exception. Jeremy Adams’ ability to weave a story between both groups of heroes is truly impressive. Each setting got it’s own chance to shine without either feeling rushed or less important. The two big surprise character reveals received an audible reaction from me as I got to them. All of the interactions felt organic and believable with witty dialogue, funny banter, and a perfect bit of bureaucratic intimidation from Hal Jordan that put a huge smile on my face. Finally, I have to talk about Hector Hammond. Hector is such an underrated and scary villain when written well and I’m happy to say that he was written very well here!

The Art:
The art team of Xermanico and Romulo Fajardo Jr. delivered some absolutely beautiful work here! From big action set pieces to close up shots during an interrogation scene, every page was incredible. The new design of Hector Hammond is unsettling and disturbing in the best way possible. Superboy and Kyle flying out and battling the Reach’s army was bombastic and fun. Specifically, seeing Kyle fly out to fight the Reach while conjuring a giant bug spray construct was so much fun. Finally, Xermanico’s cover evokes the true power of Hector’s mind and shows the danger everyone is in when Hector Hammond is on the loose.
Overall Grade: 10/10
I mentioned above that seeing a giant bug spray construct was fun, and that is what I can say about this issue as a whole, it’s just fun! I had a smile on my face as I went from page to page. With great action, solid dialogue, and a final page reveal that had me laughing and feeling genuine surprise, this issue is an absolute must read!
