It’s time for the She-Devils to let loose. This year’s Women Of Marvel issue is out, and is being led by an all-star creative team, including:
- Writers: Stephanie Phillips, Cherie Dimaline, And Alison Sampson
- Artists: Federica Muzzo, Kelsey Ramsey, And Alison Sampson
- Colorists: Rachelle Rosenberg, Fabi Marques, and Alison Sampson
- Letterers: Federica Muzzo, Kelsey Ramsey, and Alison Sampson
We start off in the Savage Land with Shanna. A spirit is calling her, and an explosion follows that. The spirit then says that her land belongs to it, and tries to take control of her body. She throws her sphere at the creature, and it gets banished. We then see The Savage Land goes back to normal.
We then see Daredevil, Bloodline, and Wolverine. The 3 of them are in the wood training. Wolverine and Bloodline then proceed to practice, and Wolverine is just a little faster than Bloodline is. It then cuts to Elektra at her place sleeping.
The creature that tried to take control of Shanna then gets control of Daredevil. Bloodline then sees Elektra and tries to stop her. Wolverine then comes and tries to help out as well. We then see Wolverine send an attack at Elektra, which gets the creature out of her.
But then The Savage Land attacks the 3 of them. Wolverine gets attacked, and she and Bloodline get teleported to Iceland. The issue shifts then and shows Bloodline working to get Wolverine back to normal.
Watching Bloodline go through and find the spirit of a dead Viking and use him to get Wolverine back was cool to see. We then see that working and Wolverine is back. The final scene shows the girls having a conversation about what went down.
This was too big to review alone. NI’s own Megan, Lauren, Janelle and I (Kat) teamed together on this review. You can see all of our thoughts about the book below.
The Art
Kat: The art for these issues every year always surprises me. And this year is no different, the art is incredible. From the first page to the last, the art goes and elevates the story in such a beautiful way.
Megan: I really enjoyed how each chapter of Women of Marvel: She-Devils #1 had such a different art style that still went really well with the overall storyline. The characters were drawn in very different ways but still looks powerful and beautiful throughout the comic. Each chapter had absolutely stunning panels, that really showed just how talented each artist is.
Lauren: While the stories all weave together, each one has a different artist, giving each story a different feel. Many of the scenes don’t take place in the real world allowing for some very creative scenes. Some even have a watercolor feel to them. One scene in particular made me smile as it shows Logan’s daughter, Laura. It proves the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
Janelle: The art is a formal Marvel-like style that any of the Marvel comics have. I do like that it is a bit more presenting of the violence. Each of the characters also have different suits, and I really admire what Elektra’s suit looks like. Each gives me an individual style, and that makes me think that they have individual personalities as well. I also like that everyone has a different hair style, whether it’s a different color or overall style. It again, reiterates them being different, and showcasing their abilities and powers on a bigger scale.
The Story
Kat: It’s always nice and refreshing to see a great group of writers put together a great story. This book has everything I could’ve asked for and more in it. But it also makes the story more enjoyable as well.
Megan: Women of Marvel: She-Devils #1 is a dark and nightmarish ride that highlights some really great characters. When I say “nightmarish”, I don’t mean in the quality. In the story as what happens in the comic is something straight out of a nightmare for the characters. I loved seeing Daredevil, Wolverine, and Bloodline working together as Shanna the She-Devil protects the Savage Land. I really would like to see these characters work together in the future. They all bring something incredible to a team.
The writers did a great job giving a spotlight to each character while not belittling the others. The writers really showed the strengths of each character and showed how powerful each is, especially when they work together. It was exciting, and action-packed throughout the comic, which I loved.
Lauren: We kick off in The Savage Land. An all too underrated world that needs some on screen recognition (cough cough… Disney). From raptors to sorcery, this anthology then drops us into a training session with Brielle, Elektra, and Laura Kinney. Still pretty new to the world of Marvel, Brielle AKA Bloodline, is Blade’s daughter. While she still has a ways to go, she’s training with the best. However, her training is put to the ultimate test, when a problem in The Savage Land finds a way out.
Janelle: This special edition issue of Women of Marvel: She-Devils, is quite interesting off the bat. All of these characters are coming together, to be an entity. It becomes apparent that most of the characters are also the female version of some of the famous male characters.
This first issue is present in “chapters” where as the reader, we get to know all of the women involved. I was hoping to see them work together more as a group, but I quite didn’t get that. It seems there is a mutual respect between them, as far as looking out for each other. To be honest, I really didn’t feel close to any of the characters that are presented.
OVERALL GRADE: 8.7/10
Kat: 10/10. This Women Of Marvel issue exceeded any and all of my expectations for the issue. The issue shows what the Badass Women Of Marvel can do, and I love also highlighting female creators in the process.
Megan: 8/10. I really want to see some of these characters work together more in the future! Wolverine and Bloodline are two that I really loved seeing together, but adding in Daredevil was just perfect. And seeing Shanna was a nice surprise!
Lauren: 7.5/10. I was so happy to see Laura and Elektra together. Throw in a newish Marvel addition, and I’m excited to see where this could go in the future. Brielle is still young, but she’s got instinct, determination, and with Wolverine and Daredevil training her, she’ll eventually be unstoppable. As she already showed she’s got what it takes in: Women of Marvel: She-Devils.
Janelle: 7.5/10. Overall thoughts are that this issue is okay. I can see the attempt of trying to set it up, and make it kind of like an Avengers team. I always love the willingness to add women into the scenario, but I want more of how the male characters are. They should be fully flushed out with backstories. Give me a reason as to why I need to root for them. I also would like to see some cameos from the guys as well. Women are often put as the support characters, so I am also expecting the male characters to do the same.
