The Story:

Firestar continues to wrestle with the idea of being on a team with Ultron while the team begins to become concerned with her behavior. Meanwhile, Tony and Rhodey finally explain why Ultron is on the team at all.

The Writing:

What is there to say about Gerry Duggan that I haven’t already said multiple times. Of course this issue was masterfully written. I will highlight some of my favorite moments because, otherwise, I will just be repeating myself on what a great writer Duggan is.

First and foremost, the handling of Firestar and her alcohol abuse is wonderful here. It is subtle enough as to not be over the top but clear enough that the team, especially Iron Man, realize that something is wrong immediately.

Second, the building of Blue Bolt’s character has been a thing of beauty. This could have easily been a stereotypical jerk character but he is being written with interesting layers and you can see that this idea of War Machine’s may just work.

Finally, Ultron’s story in this series as a whole. Ultron is one of the most well know villains in the Avengers rogues gallery. He is also one of the most interesting characters because, being a machine, he can be easily evolved to the suitability of the story. This story is shaping up to be one of the best for this long running character.

The Art:

The art team is excellent in this issue there is no other way to put it. Character beats, facial expressions, passionate kisses they are all put to page with perfection. While there is a solid action beat in this issue, the character interactions take center stage.

Capturing the nuance of an emotion is not an easy task but this team was able to consistently pull it off. And of course, I have to mention the incredible cover once again. Beautiful as always!

Overall Grade: 10/10

Another issue of West Coast Avengers, another perfect rating. This series has been a hit from the beginning and I don’t see any signs of it slowing down yet. The entire creative team is flowing together and putting out some of the best comic books I’ve read in a long time.
