Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! And this week I’m going to be reviewing the latest issue of The Amazing Spider-Man! Christos Gage is writing the issue this week, and most notably he wrote 13 episodes of the Daredevil television series when it was on Netflix!
After the shocking end to the last issue, things in NYC are in a precarious position. Spider-Man is dead. But the Juggernaut is still running around causing havoc, and only the X-Men are there to stop him. So just what can they do? Let’s jump into it!
The Amazing Spider-Man #68.Deaths by Christos Gage (writer), Mark Buckingham (artist), Mattia Iacono (colorist), VC’s Joe Caramanga (letterer), Mark Buckingham & Richard Isanove (cover art) is a solid issue that fills in some of the gaps that took place during the previous issue. It makes for a nice companion piece to read right after you’ve read #68 if you’re catching up.
The entirety of the story in this issue focuses on the X-Men team of Temper, Psylocke, Magik, Kid Omega who are all being led by Cyclops. And their job is to stop Juggernaut! Now that’s a tough job to begin with, but put that together with the fact that he’s being controlled/influenced by Cyttorak and that just ups the ante.
The battle that takes place is spectacular, and a ton of fun to read. And the most intriguing part of this issue is just who exactly is the good guy & who’s the bad guy. On the one hand you’ve got Juggernaut who’s working for or with Cyttorak. And for the entire time the story has been going on, he’s the bad guy. But at the same time we find out the X-Men are infected with something called The Blight. What exactly it is, we don’t know. But Juggernaut calls in the info to Beast & Magneto. So we’ll see where that goes.
The artwork in this issue by Mark Buckingham & Mattia Iacono is phenomenal stuff as well. The battle really pops off the page and really gives a sense as to just how destructive everyone can be when they’re not looking to protect the surrounding environment. I also got an old school vibe to the artwork when I got into the later panels with Cyttorak, so I really enjoyed that.
FINAL POINT: Christos Gage pens a fantastic companion issue to go along with issue #68, and together with some fantastic artwork from Mark Buckingham & Mattia Iacono they blend everything together in a smashing issue that is fun to read despite the fact that Spider-Man isn’t seen in this issue until the final panel. If you’ve been keeping up with the series thus far, you’re going to want to pick this issue up.
Overall Grade: 8.5/10
