The Story
Last we left the Outliers, they were sent off to be normal teenagers at the mall. History tells us that the mall and mutants don’t mix well together, and it’s proven true when the young mutants are attacked by sentinel dogs, AKA the Wolfpack.
On their own, without their mentors, they have to stop the Wolfpack, while keeping themselves and the citizens safe. But it’s proven that will be harder said than done when Deathdream is struck down, seemingly killed.
With quick thinking from his teammate, Jitter, she’s able to bring him back after he broke a few ribs and his lungs were punctured in the attack.
It wasn’t just Jitter that had a hand in helping Deathdream, as Calico put herself in harm’s way as bait to lead the Wolfpack away, while Ransom ran to find medical supplies. All the while, Nightcrawler, Wolverine, and Jubilee rushed on their way to the mall to help in any way they can.
The Writing
Gail Simone continues to tug at your heartstrings while keeping you on the edge of your seat with The Uncanny X-Men. In The Uncanny X-Men #10, she showed the Outliers truly come into their own as a team of mutants, rather than being mentored by the X-Men.
The Outliers showed that they are more than just a team, but a group of mutants who have each other’s back through thick and thin.
Seeing Jitter overcome her nervousness to help Deathdream, while Ransom talked her through her emotions, and Calico was risking her life to be the distraction was something incredible to see. This is what the X-Men were built on, teamwork and love, and that shines throughout the comic.
The Art
Andrei Bressan brings each tone that Gail Simone writes to life, and it shows throughout The Uncanny X-Men #10. With each panel that involves Calico and Ember, you can feel the heart of Calico doing whatever she possibly can to protect her friends, even if it means dying herself. With Ransom fighting off the Wolfpack, you can feel the energy he’s putting into each hit. Bressan is joined by Matthew Wilson and Clayton Cowles, who uses their colors and letterings to add even more depth to the already impactful storyline.
Overall Grade – 10/10
If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a hundred times, The Uncanny X-Men is my favorite thing to come out of From the Ashes. Gail Simone kills it in every issue. If you haven’t checked it out yet, run to your local comic book store to find The Uncanny X-Men comics!
