Doom Academy #1: A New Sheriff In Town?

*SPOILERS BELOW*

Doom Academy #1 off the back reminds me of Hogwarts.  It is set in the backdrop of an actual academy. Owned by Dr. Strange initially,  he is now not the Sorcerer Supreme. Dr. Doom has now taken that spot. Dr. Doom has an unusual way of running the school, but quickly the reader sees characters of every background.

Mainly. we are following a student named Zoe. She is navigating Doom Academy as much as she can. She wants to master all of the magic that she can.  I really like her character. It seems like she wants to make friends at the academy, and not be afraid of mistakes. 

Zoe meets a variety of people, including her roommate, named Marta. Zoe and Marta seem to not get along, but I have a feeling that they might at the end of it. I really like how Zoe is portrayed as well,  she’s got a  natural hairstyle, it looks like twists which I like to see hairstyles represented in comics.  Zoe is one of those characters that you really want to root for. I’m curious to see her reaction  when meeting Dr. Doom, and how he interacts with her. I have high hopes for her when it comes to becoming the greatest students. 

What I enjoyed overall is the diversity in Doom Academy’s students. There are different species that are represented, and treated all the same. All their superpowers seem to be appreciated and celebrated throughout this first issue.  As far as the art, it has that classic art style that I enjoy from Marvel. I also applaud the shading and the work of the artist, who is very aware of skin tones. I am wondering where Zoe and her friends will end up with the next issue.

Overall Grade: 9/10.
