“PHOENIX’s battle with THANOS and the BLACK ORDER came down to a critical decision — a moment of trust at the limits of Jean Grey’s incredible mind that has left her in incredible danger, fighting for the fate of the Phoenix Force. Meanwhile, her enemies have become more powerful than ever — as PERRIKUS’ alliance with ADANI grows to include the evil DARK GODS!” (credit: Marvel)

The Story

In Phoenix #7, Jean had no other choice but to remove the Phoenix Force from herself and transfer it to Adani. She was able to retrieve almost all of the Phoenix Force back from her when it was too powerful for Adani, but left it fractured. In Phoenix #8, it seems Jean has put herself inside a cosmic cocoon that has her reliving a memory that she often spends time thinking about. It was the time the X-Men went to fight the Dark Phoenix, but the Phoenix has changed this memory to remind Jean that all power comes at a cost.

Adani, who is still dealing with the power that was left behind when she had the Phoenix Force, is trying her hardest to understand the power and be able to use it. Perrikus is trying his best to help her focus and be able to use the power to their own benefit, but Adani struggles hard. With the Phoenix’s memories living inside of Adani, she could do incredible things with the power she has left, but she has no control of them.

The Writing

Phoenix #8 felt like a great follow up to all that happened the the previous installment, as we see what how it all impacted Jean and Adani. Seeing Jean and the Phoenix fight to fix themselves was really interesting as they had a great dialogue between each other. After Phoenix #8, I am really curious to see where Adani takes her newfound powers and how Perrikus will use it to his advantage. Stephanie Phillips does a marvelous job at showing the Phoenix’s influence over Jean and how connected the two really are.

The Art

There was some really stunning moments throughout the comic, mostly having to do with Jean. For instance, when Jean is fighting the Dark Phoenix. The bright colors mixed with the cosmic powers coming from both powerhouses gave us a full page of beautiful art that really brought a whole new depth to the story. We also get some really great looks at the former X-Men team when they went to fight the Dark Phoenix, which was a joy to see.

Overall Grade – 8.8
