The Story

After Kwannon brought the kids to the factory, or X-Men HQ, for a safe haven, she discovered a disturbing gift for her nailed to her door. The gift being John Greycrow’s arm nailed to the door, along with a letter and some very peculiar looking butterflies. Just as Kwannon is analyzing the situation, she’s attacked by what looks like a large cyborg animal. She defeats the strange robot, but still has John on her mind. She has to find him and make sure he’s okay.

Kwannon goes to John’s house to check if he’s there, but he’s nowhere to be found. Instead, Kwannon stumbles upon the crime scene and picks up the lingering energy of what happened. Using her abilities, she sees that John was ambushed by someone who had been lying in wait, but he managed to escape. She knows he’s wounded and hiding, and there’s only one place they both would go. Following her intuition, Kwannon heads to his secret cave hideout, where she finds John, injured but on the mend.

After finding John, they’re immediately attacked by more animal cyborgs. What is going on? Kwannon and John know they have to find out what happened, and with Devon’s help, they have a lead. Heading to Shinobi’s home, Kwannon knows that’s the best place to start. The peculiar butterflies that she saw when she was left John’s arm are ones she’s seen before at Shinobi’s house. But, according to Shinobi, they were a gift to him, but they came from someone he believed to be dead. Now, Kwannon and John have a new enemy that’s coming after them, and they’re desperate for Kwannon’s attention.

The Writing

This comic wasn’t very long, but so much happened in it with Kwannon, that it feels much longer. Alyssa Wong does a fantastic job at writing so many moving parts and having them all flow flawlessly. I found Psylocke #3 to be a fun read while being action-packed with a mysterious tone lingering throughout the comic. The third installment does a great job with continuing the dark and gritty storyline while adding in new factors to be excited about. I’m excited to see what happens next!

The Art

I love how Vincenzo Carratù is able to display Kwannon’s emotion throughout Psylocke #3 with such a great deal of detail. It really adds depth to every situation Kwannon finds herself in. Another thing I thing I think Carratù excels at is the action sequences with Kwannon, showing just how well trained she has been as a ninja. That matched with Fer Sifuentes-Sujo’s colors and Ariana Maher’s lettering makes each panel stand out.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.9/10
