Happy almost Black History Month! I am excited to share my thoughts on the DC Power #1, that features many African-American characters on the DC Comic roster. This first issue focuses on these powerful characters, that all serve a purpose. One of my favorite characters of all time is John Stewart. I was quite happy to see him interacting with Jo Mullein, of the Green Lantern Corps. Amanda Waller seems to play an important role in how they are working together.
I like how there are characters who are taking care of problems off of the earth. When it comes to John Stewart’s character, often times he is handling things up in space. In this issue, all of the characters are spending quite a bit of time in space.
I also enjoy the emotional depth of all the characters. When I was reading it, you can read how deeply they care about each other, and the world. With emotion, I can empathize with the losses and the wins that each character has. Particularly with the first story, dealing with a loss that effected John’s character.
As the reader, I was also introduced to Malik White, who is a new character. He attained Black Adam’s ring, and Vixen went to go and find him. Vixen needed help and asked him to say the word. Once he said Shazam, his powers were activated. Malik seems confident with his powers, to go and fight the evil that was coming to his town.
One of the delightful stories that I enjoyed reading was Cyborg and Jo. Cyborg complimented Jo on how she is settling back into her powers, and visiting earth. Jo was hesitant to go and visit earth, because she had abruptly left her family. Cyborg encouraged her to make those connections again, when they are back on earth. Again, between all the characters, it is like a family and they all love and support each other. It reminds me of how the African-American people band together and support each other through the hard and the good times.
As far as the art, the art is excellent. I enjoy the small details of the hairstyles, and the realistic look of all the characters. The artist makes every single character look different, and very unique. I really am happy to see everyone meet, and work together. It means so much to me to see this art that is displaying powerful characters in the DC Universe.
