CATCH UP WITH PHOENIX #6 HERE!
“Empowered by dark enchantments and working in concert with the evil machinations of the Dark Gods, the Mad Titan THANOS wields great, galaxy-wrecking power! Now he seeks to use it to destroy the PHOENIX. But with CAPTAIN MARVEL, NOVA, SIF and ROCKET RACCOON at her side, Jean Grey is ready to unleash some power of her own…“
The Story
With Thanos using the Warlock’s Eye in his fight to conquer the galaxy, Jean has run out of options. She can’t find any clue as to where Thanos is because the Warlock’s Eye is covering his tracks. Fortunately she has formed a team of heroes to help her in her fight to bring down Thanos. Captain Marvel, Rocket Raccoon, Sif, and Nova have some together to assist in anyway they can.
The problem still stands, Jean can’t find any remnants of Thanos, which means the Eye is doing its job. There is one person in the entire galaxy that can help Jean, and it’s Adani. There’s a connection between Adani and Jean’s mind that stayed there when Jean helped block out the voices of Adani’s mind. While Adani isn’t pleased about the connection, Jean does ask that she just asks that Adani sees and understands her. Jean shows Adani her past, from when her best friend died in her arms all the way to her time as an X-Man. Adani seems to have a little more understanding of Jean, and is able to help her.
Now that a plan is made, it’s time for Jean’s team to hunt down Thanos, and stop his diabolical plan. But will it be that cut and dry? Knowing Thanos, it never is.
The Writing
Phoenix #4 gives you the exact amount of action you want while tugging at your heartstrings. Getting a look at all of the pain and love of Jean’s past and seeing Adani internalize it felt very hard-hitting and emotional. That scene was expertly handled by Stephanie Phillips, as was this entire comic.
The fourth installment of Phoenix has so much meat to it, and it was all written to flow perfectly, without the feeling of messiness or forcefulness. With so much going on, you still see the character’s personalities of Jean’s team shine through, like Rocket’s humor, for example. Even with all of this going on, there’s still a unsuspecting surprise at the end that keeps you on your toes.
The Art
The art of Phoenix #4 is nothing short of stunning, which isn’t surprising if you have read the predecessors. With beautiful bright colors by David Curiel, and striking details by Marco Renna, there’s no way to miss here. Of course, Cory Petit’s lettering is the exclamation point at the end of this phenomenal sentence.
I’d have to say my favorite part was the look back at Jean’s past that she gave to Adani. With seeing all of the things Jean has gone through, that’s bound to be emotional. But the artists did a great job at using contrasting colors and creative branches to separate the memories, which made it all the more superb.
