The Story

Nick Fury has been on the hunt for dangerous and cunning Mystique, but how long does he have to find her before something bad happens? Turns out, not very long at all. S.H.I.E.L.D. put the word out on the streets that Destiny, Mystique’s wife, has died, but Fury doesn’t expect Mystique to fall for it.

While in Washington, D.C., Fury is attacked by Maverick, who he believed to be missing. What I really liked about this scene was that we got a great look at what Fury’s battle suit from S.H.I.E.L.D. can really do. As it turns out, the suit is extremely useful when battling someone as tough as Maverick.

Meanwhile, Mystique is on the hunt for Destiny. With some excellent mutant cameos by the way of Mystique’s mutant abilities, we see an excellent use of various mutants in action. Mystique is taking out the agents one by one on her search for her wife, but it seems that there are more moving parts happening than meets the eye. Mystique is more powerful than ever and she’s making that fact very well known.

The Writing

Declan Shalvey does a fantastic job keeping the energy high and exciting throughout Mystique #4. What I really do appreciate about this run, and especially the fourth installment, is that there’s a surprise at every corner. When dealing with Mystique, you really don’t know what to expect from her, and I think Mystique #4 perfectly illustrates that.

The Art

Declan Shalvey and Matt Hollingsworth really hit the nail on the head with giving this the espionage energy through the artwork. Usually mutant stories feel larger than life, which isn’t a bad thing. But with Mystique, it feels very grounded, which I think is perfect for Mystique.

I really appreciate Hollingsworth’s use of contrasting colors throughout Mystique #4 as I feel it elevates the story even more so. When reading, you’ll see this used extraordinarily well with a few of Mystique’s different forms she takes on.

Final Thoughts

I really like where this run is going, at least where I think it’s going. Like I said, Declan Shalvey does a great job at surprising you throughout the read.

Overall Grade – 9.1/10
