Sam Wilson Captain America #1:

“Once a social worker in Harlem, Sam Wilson’s life changed forever when he gained high-tech wings and the ability to communicate with birds. It changed again when he inherited the mantle of Captain America from Steve Rogers. Though he turned away from the shield for a time to find his path, now he’s fighting the good fight once again as…CAPTAIN AMERICA!”- Marvel Comics

The Artwork and Letters:

Starting with the cover, Taurin starts off with bright and bold imagery, inviting us into this legacy of Sam Wilson. The cover is truly inspiring and prepares us for this run and what is to come. Eder and Valentine draw a lot of really cool things in this first issue. We are met with action right off the bat as the action is well drawn and paced between both Captain’s and the Vamires.

Our team has the chance to draw a who’s who of heroes as we get Storm, Isaiah Bradley, and many more, to our surprise! Sifuentes-Sujo brings bold coloring to match the drawing. The suits are inviting to the reader’s eyes and dare I say Sam just has this aura about him as he soars high. The colors stand out to me and excite me for where this run will head because it is something I could stare at for hours as the pages turn.

Joe meets the excitement by giving life to the action through lettering the effects and the various voices given to every character. The slight tone shifts give everyone their own voice amongst the crowd, completing this awesome first issue.

The Story:

Greg and Evan kick off the story showing what Sam Wilson means to the people. He is a social worker and has a community and he is Captain America. They bring Steve to play but, they don’t make him the focus which, is smart story-telling. Steve even gets invited to the bbq, bringing a chuckle out making this story light-hearted in the same breathe.

When it comes to Eaglestar, the duo shows us why we should be cautious of a billionaire corporation and does not take long to show us why. The issue ends on a cliffhanger and I must say it has me hooked. While they bring in a bunch of characters at once, does the issue feel over-crowded at all and we get a true sense of family.

Overall:

Sam Wilson, Captain America #1, bursts onto the scene with soaring action and excitement. Sam Wilson deserves the shield and the entire team takes the opportunity to showcase why. It’s been a while since I have been excited for a Captain America run and this has me very much intrigued. Make sure to pick it up!

10/10!
