Unexpected Crossover

Mystique is continuing her mission, and doesn’t care who gets in her away. It becomes very apparent when she goes to Lowtown, when she inserts herself into the Sentinels mission to find Fabian Cortez. The Sentinels were also on the search for Cortez, but for completely different reasons(you can read all about it here). While Fabian is on the run from the Sentinels team, Mystique does what she does best, and transforms into a fellow mutant. A mutant that demands fear from all mutants and civilians.

Meanwhile, Nick Fury is hot on the case of finding Mystique. At S.H.I.E.L.D., Agent Hill has finally got a clue where Mystique is, which is Lowtown. Hill says that they received a report of an electromagnetic pulse, and caught sight of Mystique herself. Nick Fury is hellbent on finding the mutant terrorist. He will go to the ends of the earth to bring her in, and that includes going to Lowtown himself.

The Writing

This was a crossover I didn’t see coming, but I’m so glad it happened. Both comic runs have felt really underrated to me, so to see the crossover happen was a delightful surprise. If you read Sentinels #3, then you know what happens in Lowtown with the team. Seeing it from Mystique’s perspective was super interesting as it filled a lot of gaps I was curious about when reading it from the Sentinels side. Declan Shalvey blended the two stories together expertly, making it seem like two sides of the same coin.

The Art

I’ve been thoroughly enjoying the artwork in Mystique, and the second installment is no exception. Matt Hollingsworth does an amazing job with the colors in Mystique #3, making each page visually captivating. The colors were so beautifully done throughout the comic, but I think Hollingsworth’s talent is really showcased in one large panel of Mystique walking away from the city skyline. It was absolutely stunning, and was easily my favorite piece of the artwork in the comic.
