A Mission Gone Wrong

While on a routine mission in Madripoor, things go horribly wrong for the Sentinel team. Trask had gotten word that their target would be in Madripoor after the fall of Krakoa, and the team was sent as recruiters. The target, Fabian Cortez, a healing mutant, was found at the location, but surrounded by civilians as he was running a clinic for those that needed healing.

While Fabian wasn’t doing anything wrong and posed no risk, Trask still said he needs to be brought in as he shouldn’t operate freely. Lockstep disagrees with Trask and says that this is his call and he’s saying no, which already shows us that something interesting is going on in Lockstep’s head.

The human civilians whose daughter was getting healed by Fabian take it upon themselves to attack the Sentinel team while giving Fabian a chance to run, which leads to a chase. A chase that ends with Fabian face down on the ground and Lockstep asking if this was their fault. While this question is being asked, there’s an ominous feeling in the air. Magneto has entered the mission, which could prove to be more than the Sentinels bargained for.

The Writing

I’m really liking all the twists and turns the Sentinel run has given us, especially in the third installment. Magneto is always a favorite character to see, but seeing Lockstep becoming compromised and the team getting knocked down by a huge threat really brought a lot of depth. Alex Paknadel sets the tone for the story with it being told in Drumfire’s perspective as she’s being questions by Corina Ellis, who’s making her way through a lot of the From the Ashes comics lately. Paknadel also gives us a more in depth look at a grafting Sentinel, which has me very excited to see what’s in the next issue.

The Art

I really enjoy the grittiness of Sentinels #3, with the team trying to get through a doomed mission. Their facial expressions says all you need to know about what’s on their minds throughout the mission, as Justin Mason perfectly illustrated. Another thing I think needs to be said is how larger than life Magneto looked in Sentinels #3. Magneto is always a powerhouse no matter where he’s at in the Marvel Universe, but I think Mason really nailed just how daunting his presence really is.

Final Thoughts

Sentinels feels really underrated to me, as it has all the action you’d want, and as we’re seeing bits and pieces of the character’s past lives, we’re getting a good amount of heart, namely from Lockstep. I’m really interested to see where this goes with the characters and the story, especially with Corina Ellis being involved.
