“Hermes returns in a nightmarish new form, transformed and reborn by the myths of the children that witnessed Edwin’s arrival, the bloody waters, and the astral phenomena. Driven by Edwin’s consumed memories, Hermes is determined to transform yet again, fully absorbing Edwin to become the ultimate hunter of hunters…”

The investigation continues

In the last installment, Nolan started his search to look for the reasons behind the increase of deaths across the houses. His search continues in House of Slaughter #28, as he’s asking the questions it seems others are too afraid to ponder. Why are there so many white mask deaths and who is benefitting from them?

Well, others are afraid to ponder them except one person; Edwin Slaughter. Edwin has been conducting his own investigations as to why there’s so much more blood spilled in the halls lately. He would know best as he’s a scarlet mask and it’s his duty to clean up the spilled blood, the spilled blood he says is coming from the carpet itself. Edwin has been recording his findings, which are DNA samples from the carpets, and these samples have shown very interesting results.

It seems that the DNA doesn’t match the DNA of anyone in the house, which means outsiders have been inside the house. It isn’t just a couple of outsiders either, he’s narrowed it down to 17. 17 different samples of DNA from outsiders is very interesting as the number of latest deaths from a recent mission of the white masks is 18. Could these numbers correlate? What else will Edwin find on his investigations and what will they uncover the farther they go?

The Writing

The predecessor of House of Slaughter #28 was all about character building in regards to Edwin, but this time it shows that Edwin is just as helpful to this investigation as Nolan is. I enjoyed seeing how much investigating Edwin was doing behind the scenes, while being very inconspicuous about it. I think this gives Edwin so much more depth outside of the mystery that surrounds him as a character. Sam Johns has a way of writing that keeps you hooked to every part of the story while so much is going on and this is no exception. The characters keep you wanting more while the story widens with new factors being added in.

The Art

The art in House of Slaughter #28 perfectly matches the story’s dark tone, enhancing its intensity. The beginning scenes of the casualty losing his life sets the tone immediately and keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout the comic. The detailed close-ups of the characters’ faces capture the anxiety and tension in each moment, drawing the reader deeper into the narrative. With the facial expressions, the ominous story, and the overall mystery of the characters, you’re sure to have the hair sticking up on the back of your neck while reading.
