Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! And this week I’m going to be reviewing the latest issue of the Dispatches From The Occlusion Zone storyline of Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures from Daniel Jose Older & Dark Horse Comics!

The series is an interesting one, because there isn’t one overarching storyline that goes from one issue to the next. But it’s a series of self-contained stories that take place amidst the backdrop of the ongoing conflict between the Nihil & the rest of the galaxy.

This week the story focuses on Jedi Master Emerick Caphtor & his research into the Nameless. The Nameless are creatures that the Nihil use against the Jedi, that render them near powerless. When a Jedi is dealing with a Nameless, the Jedi are not able to use the Force. It doesn’t cut them off from the Force, but rather they’re paralyzed by fear. So will Emerick discover anything? Let’s jump into it!

Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures – Dispatches From the Occlusion Zone #3 by Daniel Jose Older (writer), Lucas Marangon (illustrator), Dan Jackson (color art), Comicraft’s Tyler Smith & Jimmy Betancourt (letterer’s) & Jake Bartok (cover) is a nice change of pace from what you might expect in a Star Wars comic.

Emerick Caphtor is an interesting character because he’s unlike any Jedi that I can remember reading in book or comic book form. He isn’t a skilled duelist like Anakin and he isn’t a diplomat like Obi-Wan will eventually be. He’s more of a scholar that just happens to be a Jedi almost by accident.

The issue focuses on Caphtor traveling behind the storm wall and continuing his research into the Nameless. Before long Caphtor is captured by Doctor Niv Drendow. Drendow is aware of what Caphtor is doing and what he’s researching.

The issue reminds me a little bit of a sequence out of an Indiana Jones movie. It’s a combination that works wonderfully for this issue and makes for a fun read. The issue isn’t the most action packed issue, but it doesn’t hurt the issue overall. It’s definitely worth the read if you’ve been keeping up with the series or are looking for something new to jump in to.

FINAL POINT: The issue is a nice side story to the overall war that’s been going on in the Star Wars galaxy in the various High Republic stories. It’s a good issue to read if you’re looking for a change of pace, and it’s one you should give a chance if you haven’t read the series up to this point.

SCORE: 8.0 out of 10
