Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! And this week I’m going to be reviewing the 63rd issue of The Amazing Spider-Man from Justina Ireland & Marvel Comics!
This issue is part 3 in the 8 Deaths Of Spider-Man storyline and Justina Ireland is the writer this week! Peter is going up against another Scion of Cyttorak. But this battle is more mental than physical. Will Peter survive? Let’s jump into it!
The Amazing Spider-Man #63 by Justina Ireland (writer), Gleb Melnikov (artist), Marcio Menyz (colorist), VC’s Joe Caramanga (letterer), Ed McGuinness & Marcio Menyz (cover artists) is a very good issue. It’s a nice change of pace from the previous issues and is a bit of a gut punch for Peter all things considered.
The issue features Peter taking on the Scion named Cyrios and they’re the “inevitability of time”. and her challenge is something a little different that a knockdown drag out fight. Cyrios puts him through emotional hell by reliving some of the key moments of the Spider-Man mythos. I won’t spoil what those moments are, but if you’re a long time reader you can probably guess what they are. Seeing Peter get put through these moments was fun to read, because it shows just how far he’s come as a character.
The sequence plays out in an interesting way, and then it sequences into Peter trying to balance his life between being Spider-Man & being himself. Spoiler alert, it isn’t going well. But you could probably guess that. Nobody seems super disappointed with him (yet), but they do look like they were all expecting this in some capacity.
READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW!
The ending of the issue is quite easily the best part of the issue because I read it and sat up in total surprise. It features some members of the X-Men and one of them says “I must prepare”. I won’t say who it is, but man oh man it’s very interesting! Now, what exactly is it that they have to prepare for? I’m not 100% sure but I’ve got a good guess. And my guess is that they’re going to be the next Scion that Peter has to face. Or it could be something entirely unrelated! I hope I’m right, because I would really like to see that. Because we know the Scions aren’t your average beings. So to see this character given some extra powers would be VERY interesting to read in the next issue.
FINAL POINT: Justina Ireland pens a fantastic issue in place of Joe Kelly, and it’s one that sets up a lot of interesting possibilities going forward. The issue is a lot of fun to read, and is also an emotional one that will pull at your heartstrings a little bit. Between the writing, the artwork & the color it makes for an incredible issue. And it’s an issue that I would definitely recommend reading sooner rather than later, because you are NOT going to want to miss the next issue.
SCORE: 9.0 out of 10
