Warning Spoilers Ahead for this Christmas Joy-Filled Nordic Adventure
The plot is simple enough right? An archeologist and her ex-husband, an expert in ancient Norse languages, are sent to Iceland at Christmastime to search for the legendary treasure of the Yule Lads. When others join in the hunt, the pair find themselves swept into a thrilling adventure as they race to keep it from falling into the wrong hands.
Hallmark’s 2024 season is off to a pleasantly delightful start as we have had some hits already all the while changing up the “formula” ever so slightly. If you’re a fan of Hallmark Christmas movies you know already that woman leaves a big city job to go home and falls in love. However, this movie brings us a nice blend of Tomb Raider (without all the guns and fighting) and Indiana Jones. Lacey Chabert stars as Stefanie who is following in her mom’s footsteps to find hidden treasure. She is a full-time professor (hm that is familiar) who is tasked to go on this quest by a partner of hers. Enter another familiar face Kristofer Polaha who plays Chase, Stefanie’s ex-husband (GASP!) who, would you know it is the only person she knows who can translate Icelandic.
Is It Really Different Though?
The duo embarks on a wild chase against time and others who are out for the treasure, finding themselves dressing up and sneaking into a fancy museum party, lost in a cave, and more. The chemistry between Lacey and Kristofer gels a lot in this film making it work extraordinarily well. The film doesn’t wait until the usual final scene to have the duo kiss again or recognize their love and largely there is no drama between the two once we reach our climax.
Hallmark can follow a formula but, with this film, they take us to new scenery as well as change things up a bit making this a fun light-hearted adventure filled with the spirit of Christmas. There is however, one major standout star who is a friend that everyone should have in their life and that is Olie who is played by Joel Saemundsson. He is a real ride or die friend who is there every step of the way and this makes the film that much more special.
Final Verdict
Look, I know Hallmark Christmas movies aren’t for everybody and I love them anyway but, The Christmas Quest is a departure from the usual. It takes us on a fun adventure while capturing the fun and light-hearted spirit. This is a film I think people will enjoy regardless if whether you enjoy the genre or not. So grab that glass of wine or egg nog and give this one a go!
