Going through the motions

In X-Force #5, Surge paid the ultimate sacrifice and gave her life to save the world and her absence is felt throughout the comic. Forge has taken comfort in his simulations, and is currently being taken care of by Mystique and Storm. Storm is tending to Forge in a compassionate and understanding way, while contrasting Mystique’s form of tough love.

This odd form of self care is interrupted by Sage, who’s hacked into Forge’s VR. Sage isn’t just making a courtesy call, as she quit the X-Force when Nori died because she felt it didn’t need to happen. Actually, Sage is here with information that could lead to figuring out who is behind all of these fractures and it turns out she may just be on to something.

The Writing

I really didn’t expect to have such an action packed comic after the powerful fifth installment of X-Force, but that’s exactly what we got. While we got more answers about what’s causing the fractures, I was left with even more questions. It was great to see Forge actually go through the grief of losing Surge, with Storm and Mystique playing the devil and angel on his shoulders. I thought it was a very creative way to show his conflicting feelings of the entire situation. Geoffrey Thorne does an excellent job at keeping you guessing throughout the comic, while keeping the excitement going.

The Art

The artwork of X-Force has been consistently strong but I think it shows the most when talking about how Storm and Mystique look. While they look intimidating, they also have a goddess-like beauty to them. They’re always beautiful, but I think Jim Towe brought it up several notches. Storm’s power set is another thing to keep an eye out for, as the contrasting colors of the background and the lightning makes each page feel larger than life.

Final Thoughts

I really enjoyed this installment as I felt it was really solid. The X-Force run feels like it gets stronger with every issue. Can’t wait to see where this leads to!
