Two-Face #1:
Harvey Dent was once an esteemed District Attorney putting Gotham’s scum behind bars. Ever since he was the target of a violent attack, his inner demons have come to the surface. Two-Face holds court in a suspected murder, but there may be more at play. Will Harvey bury his alter ego or allow him to take over, giving to violent tendencies?
Christian Ward (Writer) Fabio Veras (Artist) Ivan Plascencia (Colors) Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou (Letters) Baldemar Rivas (Cover)
The Artwork:
Baldemar’s cover draws us in with a simplicity showcasing Two-Face flipping his coin. It’s what we all know and love about the long-time villain. Entering the pages, we are met with a bursting array of beautiful colors. They would almost fool us into thinking that Ward was also doing the artwork. however, Ivan hits hard with his coloring. The usage of purples adds a vibrant aesthetic, as Harvey’s history is briefly catching readers up to speed.
Fabio draws a menacing villain. Dent stands out amongst Gotham’s worst as we are in a court room setting within this first issue. Seeing Harvey struggle with his darker side is shown fantastically by Fabio and Ivan throughout the shadows. How he is facing the audience in an almost unsettling way. Hassan continues his stellar year lettering perhaps some of this best work in this opening issue making the visuals tie in gorgeously.
The Writing:
Christian Ward takes us into a new area of Gotham that we spend time in. It’s from the opposite point of view, it is the courtroom. Even villains have a way of facing justice. Making this issue a character-driven narrative showcasing that Harvey is more than a fit of rage flipping a coin works perfectly. Christian understands and reminds the reader how brilliant Dent is at his core. He is more than just another one of Batman’s rogues.
Overall:
Two-Face #1 is another entry into the world of Batman’s rogue gallery, bringing us a compelling character-driven drama focusing on a beloved character. Getting to spend time behind the faces and into the mind of Dent will be one of the most interesting things DC has done. I cannot wait to see where we go!
