Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! And this week I’m going to be reviewing the 7th issue of The Ultimates from Deniz Camp & Marvel comics!
This issue is an interesting one as things are kind of in a lull at the moment. The Ultimates are licking their wounds after a brutal defeat at the hands of The Hulk. Things couldn’t look more grave, because Tony Stark is dead. So what does this mean for our heroes? And can they possibly ever recover from this? Let’s jump into it!
The Ultimates #7 by Deniz Camp (writer), Juan Frigeri (artist), Federico Blee (color artist), VC’s Travis Lanham (letterer), Mahmud Asrar, Marte Gracia; Inhyuk Lee; Miguel Mercado (cover artists) is an interesting issue and an interlude of sorts. There isn’t any real fighting sequences or drag out fights, but there is still some interesting developments storywise. And it makes for a VERY compelling issue.
The issue is split between a couple of different perspectives. The key members of the Ultimates all going about a normal day (as much as they can). It’s the one year anniversary of the attack on New York that the Ultimates were blamed for. A memorial is being held. You have Hank & Janet attending the memorial in person, while Bucky & Steve watch on in a bar. But the most interesting part of the issue is the quick bit with Thor. I won’t go into details, but there is going to be HUGE implications from these two pages. Oh, and the latest page is also huge two. But that will be for another issue.

It’s going to be very interesting to see who the team recovers from this and moves forward with the Maker inevitably returning. There’s enough time for the team to prepare and get ready. At the same time this team feels so incredibly underprepared. They’ve got a lot of work to do, but if they’re anything like their counterparts in the other universes than we know they’ll rise to the occasion.
FINAL POINT: Deniz Camp pens a great issue that is a nice change of pace from the last couple of issues. It sets up the next chapter of the story and puts our heroes on a trajectory towards what feels like the inevitable. And the path they walk on that journey is truly going to be remarkable to read.
SCORE: 8.0 out of 10
