Everyone in the city of New York is losing their minds! Black Tarantula’s app has turned the citizens upside down, and Luke Cage is the one taking the brunt of it all. As the mayor, he’s trying to figure out how to stop Black Tarantula from taking another politician hostage, while trying to figure out what to do about the corruption that lead to this.

Gwen, who has been trying to deal with Black Tarantula, is more motivated than ever to find him. On her way to locate Black Tarantula, Gwen wandered into a whole other problem; the town is freaking out in the worst way possible. Citizens are jumping out of buildings, attacking each other, and even attacking police! Is this connected to the app? Has Black Tarantula’s app really made that much of an impact with the entire city?

The Writing

I found Spider-Gwen: The Ghost-Spider #8 to be a really fun read with a great amount of action. Stephanie Phillips knows how to keep you invested in the story and its characters, and she did just that. I found this to be a really unexpected continuation as I assumed Black Tarantula would be much more involved in the eighth installment, but it added even more depth to the overall story.

It was great to see Luke Cage’s perspective as a mayor and as a man of justice, since it seems he’s very torn between the two. It felt really relatable as the reader because we’ve been wondering if Gwen is fighting on the right side after seeing the corruption of the judge. I’m really excited to see where this goes, as the story continues to get more meaty with each issue.

The Art

While I really enjoyed the artwork in Spider-Gwen: The Ghost-Spider #7, I’m really excited to see Paolo Villanelli back as the artist. Villanelli draws each panel in such a way that shows extraordinary emotion from each character, you’re not able to look away from the page. In this comic, you can see the high emotions from each character, such as the anger from the corruption, or the fear from the citizens. Of course, Matt Milla matched Villanelli’s energy with his colors that gave the pictures even more depth. Ariana Maher made each word pack even more of a punch with her lettering. The artists of Spider-Gwen: The Ghost-Spider deserve all their flowers for their fantastic talents.
