Pros:
Marty:
One of the standout elements in Moana 2 is its maturity. Moana’s growth from the first film is evident, and the addition of her younger sister adds depth, especially in how the film explores themes of family dynamics, sibling responsibility, and sacrifice. It beautifully portrays Moana’s evolving perception of the world, making her journey more than just a quest, it’s a rite of passage.
The film excels in balancing perspectives, offering lessons and entertainment for both children and adults. For younger viewers, the adventure is thrilling, while older audiences will appreciate the nuanced emotional layers. Themes of connection, exploration, and unity are woven throughout, reinforcing values of community and empathy.
The new characters enrich the narrative and world-building. Each addition feels purposeful, contributing to Moana’s personal journey and the broader exploration of Oceania. Seeing former adversaries return and align for a common cause adds a layer of redemption and depth, enhancing the emotional impact.
Visually, Moana 2 is stunning. The animation is breathtaking, with vibrant landscapes and intricate character designs. Symbolic callbacks to the original film provide a satisfying continuity that long-time fans will appreciate, deepening the connection between both installments.
LJ:
- Auli’i Cravalho is in peak form here as Moana. She has more acting experience and it shows.
- ’Beyond’ is a stand out song of the movie and is well done.
- Having a crew for this adventure was a good decision to give Moana a fresh experience and keep monotonous sailing interesting.
- Diving more into the mythological side is interesting and feels right for this franchise. I just wish they had more time to explore it.
- Seeing Moana level up and be a valued member of the tribe was refreshing.
Cons:
Marty:
While the film hits emotional highs, the music falls slightly short compared to the original. The songs, though fitting within the movie, lack the unforgettable, standalone appeal of tracks like “You’re Welcome.” There’s one standout song, but overall, the soundtrack may not linger in audiences’ minds beyond the credits.
Additionally, the storyline, while engaging, mirrors the first film’s structure a bit too closely. The plot twists offer fresh moments, but some may feel a sense of déjà vu. It’s a well-executed formula, but those expecting a bold narrative departure might find it familiar.
LJ:
- Dwayne Johnson offers more of the same performance and isn’t really given anything interesting to do.
- While a couple of the songs are great, the absence of Lin Manuel Miranda is definitely felt. Maui’s song was an unfortunate example of how vital the composer was to the franchise.
- The character design for a couple of the creatures didn’t feel like they fit the film and took me out of it for a moment.
- Not truly meeting the villain of the movie until the mid-credit scene was disappointing and likely due to the story arc of the original streaming show.
Overall Verdict:
Marty – 8 out of 10:
Moana 2 is a heartfelt, visually stunning sequel that expands on the themes of family, growth, and adventure introduced in the original. Despite some musical shortcomings and a familiar plot structure, it delivers emotional depth and powerful messages that resonate with both young and old. The end credits hint at an exciting future for Moana’s journey, and it’s a continuation worth anticipating.
Family Recommendation:
Both my daughters (ages 4 and 10) were captivated, and so was I. It’s a must-watch for families, offering a touching adventure that sparks both joy and reflection.

LJ – 7 out of 10:
This is a good followup to the original film, but the original effort to make it into a streaming show held it back from being truly realized. The absence of Lin Manuel is unfortunate, but at least they added Cravalho and Johnson at the last minute. The movie is enjoyable, has a couple of good songs, and is a great option for families at the multiplex.
