*Some spoilers ahead!*
A target on their back
Last we saw in last issue, Johnny Blaze had saved a sea witch and she seemed to know more about the Spirits of Vengeance than he did. In Spirits of Vengeance #3, it’s clear that something is coming for them and they all have a target on their backs. Danny Ketch receives a message by fire on the graves of Barbara Ketch, Roxanne Simpson, and Linda Badilino showing that even in the afterlife, the deceased family members aren’t safe from whatever is hunting them.
Now that it’s clear something is coming for the Spirits of Vengeance, it’s time to figure out what this is. So Danny goes to search for Johnny Blaze and finds him already in his own situation with a villain. With the assist from Danny, Johnny is able to put down the villain to deal with more important things. Johnny fills Danny in about the Spirit of Violence, although he has very limited knowledge on where it is and who its host is.
It seems Danny and Johnny aren’t the only ones going through a tough situation, as Vengeance and Kowalski have a situation of their own. It seems Vengeance is hellbent on stealing Kowalski’s flames, even with him being in a weakened state.
The Writing
I feel like the excitement is really picking up in Spirits of Vengeance #3 with Danny and Johnny now working together and we see what Vengeance is up to with Kowalski. I also really loved the Blood Hunt tie ins to their story.
Sabir Pirzada does a great job with multiple tones throughout the comic, making you emotionally invest in each one. The pacing was handled well given how much was happening in Spirits of Vengeance #3. I look forward to seeing what’s next!
The Art
The artists of Spirits of Vengeance #3 somehow made the dark and gritty characters into a beautiful work of art. The juxtaposition of the dark colors from the characters and the brightness of their flames or their power sets make each page even more exciting to look at than the last. Travis Lanham does a superb job with the lettering, making each page hit harder than it has any right to. Hats off to the artists!
I give this a 8.6/10
