Absolute Wonder Woman #2:

Creatures sent up from the depths of Hell stare down Gateway City and its citizens. They aren’t the only beings from the underworld that have found themselves in this innocent place. Absolute Wonder Woman continues as Diana must face down treacherous Harbingers and tiny American Generals with Harbinger-sized egos in issue #2 of this reimagined tale from the minds of Kelly Thompson and Hayden Sherman.

IT’S ART!

I Almost am at a loss for words as far as the downright breath taking artwork that graces the inner pages of this issue. Hayden draws up some intense creatures to test Diana in battle but, what I love most about what Hayden is doing is playing with the size and scale.

VOTE IN THIS YEARS CHEERSIES!

When it comes to the monsters she is small in comparison and yet when we see Diana amongst Steve they are the same size and then when we see her face to face with the General she is towering over him. I really enjoy the scaling of the characters and showing just how unique Diana is.

Speaking of unique, Jordie is making the most of the coloring in this issue. I love how her lasso is gleaming red, and her horse Pegasus is a demonic horse, but the way he is shown, he has a sense of softness. When it comes to hell, the landscape is not one of fire and brimstone; the blending of colors and drawing makes it seem like a quiet place. There is a lot to love in this issue but, the colors take the cake for me.

The Story:

Kelly is weaving a reimagined origin story for our Amazonian hero, and setting her in Hell and being the last daughter of her people is not something I would have thought would work, but, my goodness, does it ever!

In the battle, Diana is fierce and speaks with harshness. When we see her with Steve, it’s a light switch to where she has this innocence to her that we fall in love with so quickly. You can set these characters in Hell, but there is still beauty to be found in what Kelly is writing.

Carey’s lettering adds to the harshness in tone with Diana and the fragile ego of our human military members that bring chuckles as they can yell at her all they want, but, in the end, they are delicate little men.

Overall:

Absolute Wonder Woman #2 is a grand slam in the new Absolute series DC has cooking. This unique reimagining of Wonder Woman works so well and it isn’t all just fighting big monsters as it captures the essence of Diana, Steve, and what these characters are all about. I am in awe of this issue and I need #3 now!

10/10 Overall
