Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! And this week I’m going to be reviewing the latest issue in the Star Wars: Battle of Jakku series from Alex Segura & Marvel!
It’s a new chapter in the story, but the characters are still the same. The New Republic has barely begun and it’s already facing it’s greatest test so far. What remains of the Empire is uniting under Governor Adelhard. Plus Luke Skywalker, just barely removed from helping Vader defeat the Emperor is battling a formidable dark side foe. So let’s jump into it!
Star Wars: The Battle of Jakku – Republic Under Siege #1 by Alex Segura (writer), Stefano Raffaele (artist), Alex Sinclair (color artist), Jethro Morales (artist), Jim Campbell (color artist), VC’s Joe Carmanga, Taurin Clarke (cover artist) is an issue with two stories in it, and they’re both equally great.
The first story, titled From The Depths shows the fledgling New Republic struggling with being the biggest force in the galaxy. The wookies need help on their home planet, and Leia is more than willing to help them.
As is brought to her attention by Mon Mothma, they’re stretched INCREDIBLY thin. And as Mothma says, “governance rarely holds the same idealistic wonder as revolution.” We also see the latest from Governor Adelhard’s perspective. Not a lot happens here, but we do see that there’s more behind Adelhard than just a strong will and belief in his ideals.
VOTE IN THIS YEARS’ CHEERSIES!
The other part of the story involves Luke Skywalker taking on the acolytes of the beyond. The battle is pretty evenly matched. The shock of the issue is when an unexpected guest shows up in the form of Doctor Aphra!
The other story Consolidation focuses exclusively on Adelhard. We get a little bit of backstory and what motivates him into doing what he does. It’s a super compelling story and makes it my favorite one of the issue. As I’ve said before, Adelhard is a completely new character. So we don’t know where he’s going to end up or if he’ll survive. So to learn a little bit about him is great.
FINAL POINT: Alex Segura pens a great story that picks up where the last issue left off, while simultaneously raises the stakes for our heroes. It’s a story that’s barely just begun and still has so much further to go, and it’s going to be a great read. This is an issue you should definitely pick up this week!
Score: 8.0 out of 10
