After NYX #4 when The Krakoan reigned terror, it was revealed that the news cameras were rolling and everyone got a good look at the chaos brought on by some of the mutants. The Krakoan, who is actually Hellion, had been working with Empath, Sophie Cuckoo, and the other Cuckoo sisters in secret, was arrested with Prodigy. Prodigy, Ms. Marvel, Wolverine, and Anole are sitting on top of Prodigy’s rooftop trying to make sense of the whole situation. Wolverine is the first to realize they’ve been played at the hands of the Cuckoo’s, which Kamala, AKA Ms. Marvel, denies that Sophie wouldn’t do that to them.

Meanwhile, Anole is keeping an eye on the Truthseekers, who now go by the Purifiers, when he notices they suddenly stop moving. Sophie has taken control of them, and is planning on sending the Purifiers home to rethink their lives as a way to show she’s changing.

Of course, Kamala forgives her and brings her back onto the team. That’s when we get a really good look at Empath’s plan and see what he’s planning for the mutants and the humans. It all comes down to manipulating the county council’s votes for mutant control for things such as deportation or mutant exclusion zones. Kamala, being the hero she is, hatches a plan to use Empath’s own plan against him, but do it better.

Something I really liked was was much happened in NYX #5, but it still flowed really well. We saw the aftermath of the fourth installment, Sophie having her redemption, Kamala’s plan get put into action, and we saw how that plan worked. It was a really meaty comic, while still giving each part of the plot it’s own time to shine.

I feel Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly excel at giving fans the perfect amount of story while still having the ability to make us antsy for the next issue. Another thing they do really well with is conveying the emotions coming from the characters, making it easy for you to put yourself in their shoes and feel each emotion. That was very apparent with NYX #5 as you felt the anger towards the Purifiers or Empath, or the excitement from Kamala’s plan and seeing how it played out.

As for the art and letters of NYX #5, I’d say it all portrayed the story perfectly, as well as the emotional. The tones of the story were excellently shown throughout the comic, and added even more depth to the storyline. Something I really enjoyed was seeing Sophie and her sister’s powers at use. The bright pink was beautiful, but see their malicious faces floating added a more intimidating impact to the powerset.

Overall, I’ve been enjoying NYX and have loved the story we’ve gotten. I’m really looking forward to seeing what’s next for these mutants and their time in NYC.
