Avengers versus X-Force

In X-Force #4, we were left with the cliffhanger of the Avengers showing up where the X-Force was. Storm immediately recognized Forge, but it becomes clear in X-Force #5 that she thought he was a different Forge. The Avengers attack the X-Force with the force worthy of a superhero team fighting the good fight. Although they seem to be enemies, it turns out they’re fighting for the same goal; to stop Nuklo.

When Nuklo appears and leaves as soon as he does, Forge figures out what the fracture has been all along. Nuklo is opening portals all around the world, and linking dimensional nexus points. He only has to complete three then all the portals stay open, which will allow the monsters passing through to stay and destroy the world.

Sage is able to track down where Nuklo will make the next portal and the X-Force, with the Avengers by their side, rush to that location. Once they arrive, it becomes clear that the answer to their problem is down to one person making the ultimate sacrifice to seal the fracture.

The Writing

This was easily the most hard-hitting installment of the new X-Force run. Geoffrey Thorne keeps you on the edge of your seat with the nonstop action and unexpected turns at every corner. The tone of the comic changes so drastically in a few places, as it should, and it’s handled perfectly. Plus, there’s an interesting cliffhanger that really makes me antsy to see what happens next for the X-Force.

The Art

The artwork of X-Force #5 is as hard-hitting as the story itself. The Avengers looked phenomenal as did any fight scenes they were involved in. Something I really think stuck out in this issue was the look of the power sets from each character. Of course, Storm’s power will always look magnificent, but Nori and Askani were the real standouts of X-Force #5. I really look forward to seeing the next issue and what the artists will gift us with next.

Final Thoughts

I would recommend anyone that’s a fan of the older X-Force comics to check this run out. It has everything you could want in a mutant comic with plenty of unexpected twists and turns in every comic.

9.2/10
