Spider-Man Black Suit & Blood #4:
Black Suit & Blood is Marvel’s excuse to bring out all the writing legends and have them pen some fun, unique tales of Spider-Man during his black suit era.
David Michelinie co-created Venom and is back and clearly having a blast with this series. The same can be said for icon G. Willow Wilson.
These are untold stories that are finally being revealed and Spider-Man fans are loving a look back into one of the best Spider-Man eras of the past 60 years!
Creative Team:
Writer: G. Willow Wilson, David Michelinie, Hayden Sherman
Artist: Valentina Pinti, Tadam Gyadu, Hayden Sherman
Letters: VC’S Joe Caramagna
Color Artist: Luis Wences, Dee Cunniffe
PUBLISHER: Marvel Comics
The Art:
The Cover alone is a big draw. Anytime I see that black suit on a Spider-Man cover, the impulse to buy is large!
In “Past Lives,” The art is dark and for a reason as Peter teams up with old flame Black Cat to pull a robbery for a good cause.
More of the same in “Achilles Shield,” as Spidey tries to help a beloved professor find a solution to his “super” problem.
It’s a dark, gritty issue that follows the title to a tee as everything is done in shades of white, black and red.
The Writing:
The writing is meant to be fun and one and done. All the heavy hitters embed a gritty tone and lesson within their tales, as this is Spider-Man acting in the gray area, something we don’t often see with the wall-crawler.
He’s trying to do good by doing some low-level crimes. It’s a unique take on Spider-Man and is supported by the fact he’s influenced by the black symbiote suit.
With “Inside the Mind of a Master,” we really get a peak inside Parker’s head in this trippy tale.
The styles are all different, yet interconnected to this surreal time in Spider-Man’s legacy.
Overall: 8/10
They are definitely meant to be one-offs, but they play a fun purpose of giving us insight into the inner battle Peter went through during the black suit era.
It’s a solid book and series and one that should be checked out by Spider-Man fans of all ages.
