From the screen to the comics
If you’re like me, then you fell in love with Kahhori when you watched Marvel’s What If…? season two on Disney+. Kahhori being a brand new character was exciting enough but adding in how much work Marvel put in to ensure that her Mohawk background was handled respectfully was a beautiful thing to see. With Ryan Little, who worked on What If…? and Todd Harris, it was sure to be a smash hit. But adding in Indigenous writers Arihhonni “Honni” David and Kelly Lynne D’Angelo for Kahhori: Reshaper of Worlds #1 as their Marvel Comics debut is something special.
Into the comic we go
Kahhori, who’s continuing to show us what a hero she is, chases a threat who’s well known to the Marvel fans, out of the Sky World. In the exciting chase, Kahhori lands herself in New York City, more specifically, Hell’s Kitchen, where she meets a couple of our favorite heroes, Daredevil. There’s not much time for introductions as the chase is still on with the threat, who’s using the powers of the space stone for evil.
The chase is on as Kahhori is transported to another place but this time she’s greeted by none other than Moon Knight. Moon Knight who’s already on the defense, learns Kahhori is more than he bargained for as she is even more knowledgeable than he is about the moon than he is. After that, there’s a very nice mutual respect between the two as they try to take down the villain of the story. That is, until Kahhori transports her and the offender to Upstate New York, into the Ancestral Mohawk Lands. And that’s when the real fight happens for Kahhori.
The Writing
I loved so many things about Kahhori: Reshaper of Worlds #1, it’s hard to nail down each one. For starters, seeing Kahhori work alongside characters that I’ve been a huge fan of most of my life was phenomenal. Seeing them interact and find a common ground in some way, such as Kahhori and Moon Knight bonding over the power of the moon, was really great to see. I love how the writers were able to insert her into the Marvel Universe with its characters and still have her be authentic and true to her character.
Kahhori: Reshaper of Worlds #1 is nonstop excitement from beginning to end, whilst having wonderful character building moments for Kahhori herself. This was a beautifully written comic that you could tell had the culture of the character in mind. Kahhori is such a compelling character and I truly can’t wait to see more of her.
The Art
There’s not a single negative thing I can say about the artwork of Kahhori: Reshaper of Worlds #1. With gorgeous and vibrant colors juxtaposed with the impressive amount of detail, you feel like you’re on the Ancestral Plane. My personal favorite was every panel that had the villain of the comic looked larger than life with the bright, abstract effects of the space stone being used. Hats off to the artists because they made each page even more exciting to look at than the last.
